Strengths-based approaches that emphasize culturally competent services and naturally occurring community support may be more appropriate than traditional mental health services for African American ...adults with psychiatric disabilities. An examination of the literature on service utilization and treatment needs for this population highlights the paucity of empirical studies in these areas, while an exploration of the literature related to psychiatric recovery, a prominent strengths-based framework, reveals insufficient application of the approach to the specific interests of African American service recipients. We suggest that recovery is in fact highly compatible with such culturally relevant approaches as the Afrocentric model, and argue that the concept of recovery may therefore provide a resonant and particularly useful framework for practice with this population. Implications for research, practice and policy are discussed.
An interdivisional collaboration to foster the development of strengths‐based policies for children, youth, families, and communities is described. The initiative includes (1) producing a book that ...integrates scholarly research and policy; (2) developing materials for policymakers to use, including a policy‐oriented summary of the book; (3) enhancing the capacities of the divisions to communicate with and influence policymakers; and (4) taking action steps to influence policymakers. During the process of developing these products, a number of tensions emerged between the academically‐based and policy‐based authors of the book, many of which centered around how the information should be presented and, in particular, how to formulate and present policy recommendations. Tensions fell into four general categories: understanding the appropriate scope for recommendations, using the right language, understanding the kind of information that is needed, and understanding the bottom line. The author concludes by urging psychologists to become adept at understanding and participating in the public policymaking process.
This chapter explores the nature of the psychology of positivity and how strengths‐based approaches are used with individuals and organizations. Positive psychology has emerged as the scientific ...study of positive human functioning and flourishing intrapersonally, interpersonally and collectively. The chapter offers an up‐to‐date edited title, with leading international scholars providing comprehensive and importantly critical reviews of wide areas of literature related to the psychology of positivity and strengths in the workplace. It considers three levels of research: the subjective level, the individual level, and the group level. Research at the subjective level includes valued subjective experiences and is broken down into past, present, and future constructs. The individual level involves research into individual traits that are positive, such as character strengths, talent, and the capacity for vocation. Finally, the group level involves research into 'civic virtues and the institutions that move individuals towards better citizenship: responsibility, nurturance, altruism, civility, moderation, tolerance and work ethic'.
This paper critically analyzes a community collaborative approach for implementing Health and Physical Education (HPE) lessons within Gippsland primary schools (Victoria, Australia). The rural ...community collaborations reflected upon are embedded within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) 'School Centres for Teaching Excellence' (SCTE) initiative and are timely with the current curriculum reform in Health and Physical Education. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on and share the experiential learning offered where the curriculum is relevant, engaging, contemporary, physically active, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate for all stakeholders; namely university pre-service teachers, primary school children and primary teachers. It is envisaged that through sharing the various dynamics involved in a SCTE program, educators may benefit and subsequently consider the suitability and possibility of establishing similar collaborations within their context.
This chapter describes strength‐based approach (SBA) that takes an integrated approach in which deficits are addressed, with emphasis on identifying and building the client's strengths. The ...responsivity principle is concerned with the way treatment is delivered. It has two components, general and specific responsivity. Positive psychology equips clients with the skills necessary to fulfill their potential while at the same time not neglecting efforts to ameliorate problems and difficulties. Perhaps the approach to sex offender treatment that most closely matches a positive psychology or strengths‐based approach is the Good Lives Model (GLM). The GLM offers an approach to treatment which aims to provide sexual offenders with the skills and attitudes necessary to develop a more satisfying life through addressing unmet needs. The chapter considers some of the challenges to implementing sex offender treatment programs in correctional settings.

Book Chapter
This chapter first addresses the problems with punishment‐based strategies with sexual offenders in order to demonstrate the inadequacy of this approach and turn to a consideration of more positively ...based, and demonstrably effective, ways of dealing with the problems these offenders present. Next, it considers the relevance of theories for effective treatment, beginning with a brief survey of target‐specific theories followed by a similar examination of theories that encompass all aspects of sexual offending. The attention is then directed at treatment evaluation where it considers the value of the random controlled trial (RCT), the so‐called incidental design involving a comparison with an incidentally available group of untreated offenders, and finally the use of risk estimates of expected recidivism as the basis upon which to evaluate treatment‐induced reductions in reoffending. This is followed by a brief appraisal of the available outcome literature.

Parentification is the distortion or lack of boundaries between and among family subsystems, such that children take on roles and responsibilities usually reserved for adults. Because of the trauma often related to the parentification process, research has tended to focus on psychopathology and other negative outcomes. This potential overpathologizing could result in missed opportunities to uncover exceptions. Hence, this research intended to examine the relationship between parentification and perceived family strengths of adolescents, consistent with strengths based approach. The participants of this study were 639 high school students sampled from 4 schools in B city. To analyze data, a series of cannonical correlation analysis was performed. The results of this study are as follows: First, the level of parentification was generally low among research participants and no significant gender difference was found in parentification score. Second, participants perceived their family strengths somewhat high and no significant gender difference was found in the score. Third, the result of cannonical correlation analysis showed significant relationships between parentification and perceived family strengths and a differential gender effect of unfairness on family strengths. Discussions and suggestions related to the results are provided.
