Local Histories/Global Designsis an extended argument about the "coloniality" of power by one of the most innovative Latin American and Latino scholars. In a shrinking world where sharp dichotomies, ...such as East/West and developing/developed, blur and shift, Walter Mignolo points to the inadequacy of current practices in the social sciences and area studies. He explores the crucial notion of "colonial difference" in the study of the modern colonial world and traces the emergence of an epistemic shift, which he calls "border thinking." Further, he expands the horizons of those debates already under way in postcolonial studies of Asia and Africa by dwelling in the genealogy of thoughts of South/Central America, the Caribbean, and Latino/as in the United States. His concept of "border gnosis," or sensing and knowing by dwelling in imperial/colonial borderlands, counters the tendency of occidentalist perspectives to manage, and thus limit, understanding.
In a new preface that discussesLocal Histories/Global Designsas a dialogue with Hegel's Philosophy of History, Mignolo connects his argument with the unfolding of history in the first decade of the twenty-first century.

In the midst of what has been termed the ‘urban age’, two divergent approaches to understanding life in cities have emerged. In this first of three urban geography progress reports, I engage these ...two strands of urban theory, identifying key differences in their intellectual, political and geographical genealogies, and consider their political and epistemological implications. Borrowing from Chakrabarty’s concept of History 1 and History 2, I name these approaches ‘Urbanization 1’ and ‘Urbanization 2’. Urbanization 1 is exemplified by the planetary urbanization thesis that posits the complete urbanization of society, whereas Urbanization 2 is characterized by a more diverse set of interventions, united by a political and epistemological strategy of refusing Eurocentrism and ‘provincializing’ urban theory.

This article sheds light on the social and conceptual history of subalternity in the years around 1800 by highlighting the presence of subaltern officials within European military and administrative structures. I analyze the writings of these subalterns for their narratological
characteristics in several autobiographic texts. To this end, I portray subaltern applications and curricula vitae addressed to the provincial administration of the Rhineland after the Napoleonic Wars.
The history of mankind is a history of survival, subjugation of external and internal nature as well as exploitation and mastery of humans. The exploitation of human labour by means of physical ...violence is a phenomenon that has been going on since prehistoric times, through the epochs of the Egyptians, Hellenes, Romans, European feudalism and colonialism up to modern times and the modern era of globalism. Starting from hierarchically ordered violent relationships in (small) groups, processes of planned and instrumentalized subjugation are aiming to master others and thus to “improve” the living conditions of the one’s in power. This involves the violent expropriation and appropriation of social space and natural resources especially that of living labour. The focus of this text is on relations of oppression and consciousness that are reflected in the discussions of the "subaltern." That is, the constitution of (postcolonial) power relations and their relevance in order to understand contemporary social relations of domination and mastery in the light of subaltern consciousness.

This research article reports how Hosseini's novel The Kite Runner depicted subaltern women characters and their consciousness regarding the injustices imposed on them. There have been a limited ...number of female characters in the novel, albeit they have been enough to explore the ground reality of their contemporary time. This study utilized subaltern theories, particularly those developed by Ranajit Guha and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, to explore the depiction and consciousness of subaltern women characters in the novel. The findings of this article reveal that the majority of the women characters were victimized and ignored in society because of their socio-cultural stereotypes and national and international intervention in their lives. As a result, they were deprived of the opportunity to follow their passions and make their own decisions, not only in their society but also within their families. This study further shows how social, cultural, and religious milieus became responsible for making them invisible and unheard in their own society. In addition, this study sheds light on how patriarchal ideology became an indispensable component of women's marginalization by restricting their voices, freedom, and social mobility. However, the majority of the female characters developed their consciousness about injustices against them and resisted such injustices by breaching long-established social and religious norms and values in their society. In a broader sense, this study will have important significance in unfolding subaltern women's ground reality in further study.
Over the last two decades, environmental history (EH) has been affected by the emergence of the Environmental Humanities and the political ecology approach. Seemingly, the field of Subaltern/Critical ...Studies (S/CS) has progressively succeeded in including epistemologies and experiences from the Global South in scholarly debates. This parallel development allows these two fields of inquiry to broaden their respective research interests and pose innovative and topical theoretical and methodological issues. Analysing the overlaps and potential confluences between the EH and S/CS brings us to a novel understanding of the concept of subalternity based on its relationship with the concept of indigeneity, makes room for the non-human and the ecological elements in the category of subalterns, questions the very validity of the term subaltern.
