The acceptance and nutritional value of a fish protein concentrate (FPC) based weaning formula fed to normal and malnourished children and infants in Egypt was studied. The acceptabilty of the FPC ...formula was very high and it was well tolerated. All children, both normal children and those suffering from different forms of protein calorie malnutrition, whether breastfed or entirely dependent on the FPC formula for their protein requirement, thrived normally on the FPC formula. The rich sources of fish in the Mediterranean, Red Sea or Lake Nasser could supply raw material for local production of FPC.
Extract: Sodium intake of infants varies widely with the type of food consumed. However, few reports are available describing the nutrients, including sodium values, of dietary intakes of infants ...receiving supplemental foods. The purpose of this study was to determine the sodium, energy, and nutrient values of diets for infants from low-income families participating in the WIC program. The sample consisted of 306 infants, aged 4 through 7 months, who were seen in well-child clinics. Approximately 200 of the infants were reportedly fed commercially prepared baby food as the only solid food; 55 received 50% or more of their energy from table foods. The dietary intakes of infants receiving supplemental foods and consuming commercially prepared baby foods included significantly less sodium than the intakes of infants fed primarily table foods. As a group, all infants met the RDAs for most nutrients but had higher sodium values than reported by other researchers. The group of infants for whom consumption of table foods was reported had values above the acceptable range for sodium primarily because the caregivers failed to provide low-sodium, nutrient-dense, supplemental foods in the quantities prescribed but instead substituted sodium-dense meat and vegetable products. Because prenatal nutrition is a determinant of the health of mothers and their infants, assessment of dietary intakes of pregnant women is important. Although WIC program participants (women in low ...income or nutritional-risk categories) receive a package of supplemental foods, increased nutrient intake is not guaranteed. Evaluation of clients' food intakes by 24-hour dietary recall is a key element of an Illinois WIC program to assess both the pregnant woman's nutritional status and WIC program effectiveness. A dietary data analysis system compared the nutrient intakes of 115 WIC and 651 non-WIC participants to determine nutrient density of the diets and the frequency of use of WIC-approved foods. Both groups consumed foods from the WIC food package, but WIC women ate more WIC-approved foods; their increased consumption of milk and orange juice contributed to higher energy and nutrient intakes. RDAs for calcium and vitamin D were more closely met for the WIC than for the non-WIC group. Although diets did not become more nutrient dense as a result of the WIC food package, the availability of WIC supplemental foods increased total food intake of participants. (nm)

Only 21.7% of their newborns weighed less than 2.5 kg, in contrast to 34.7% in the non-ICDS group. The historical background of poverty in Great Britain is reviewed with emphasis put on the part nutrition played in the setting of the scale rates of supplementary benefit. Studies by Roundtree and ...Beveridge are cited. Charts and tables show suggested subsistence diets, supplementary benefit scales, range of efficiency of food purchase by income group, and energy requirements of children. It is concluded that the present level and calculation of the supplementary benefit scales should be reviewed.
Data from two prospective studies of the ovulation method were used to assess pregnancy rates and users' fertility-related behaviors among breastfeeding women. The rate of unplanned pregnancy was ...less than 1% during the first 6 months of lactational amenorrhea. However, the unplanned pregnancy rate was elevated among breastfeeders during the months after menses return compared with the pregnancy rate during nonlactating cycles. Rates were also elevated at the time when infant feeding supplementation was started. This increase in unplanned pregnancies was not directly attributable to nonadherence to the ovulation method rules; there was some indication that adherence to the rules actually may be increased during those months. Therefore, special emphasis on both the need for improved breastfeeding support to delay menses return and the increased potential for method failure among new users during this period of time should be incorporated into ovulation method training and support programs.
