Corpus linguistics, German linguistics and the Teaching of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache – DaF) are strictly connected disciplines (cf. Fandrych/ Tschirner 2007). This ...notwithstanding their combination for descriptive, applicative and didactic purposes is still not widespread. In university teaching theory and practice, the connections are in fact mainly binary, between corpus linguistics and German linguistics, between German linguistics and DaF and between corpus linguistics and DaF. On the contrary, the present volume aims at bringing out the interconnections among all three disciplines; the use of empirical approaches intended to foster the development of linguistic and crosslinguistic awareness will play a central role. The focus of the volume is on morphology and syntax, two linguistic domains that are traditionally considered central to grammar and that are well suited to be understood and analysed by means of corpus linguistics corpus linguistics. Their analysis may serve as a model for other linguistic levels.

This paper deals with the didactic concept of Learners As Designers (Jonassen and Reeves, 1996) which is based on the assumption that digital media have the potential to accompany, support, and ...complement the learning process as a cognitive tool, to enable active knowledge construction and transfer, and to change the role of learners in the classroom. The events triggered by the pandemic have reinforced the need for distance learning, which requires the ability to work autonomously, to further develop learning strategies supported by digital tools, and to develop key competencies. The study aimed to determine the potential of the Learners As Designers concept to motivate students to learn autonomously, apply new vocabulary learning strategies supported by digital tools, and improve their digital literacy. The study was conducted in 2019/2020 among 78 students of German for Specific Purposes at the University of Belgrade, Singidunum University Belgrade, Serbia, and University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The students used the digital tool Quizlet to consolidate lexical items. Data were collected through a questionnaire with open and closed questions. The results of the quantitative analysis showed that students spend more time on vocabulary learning than before. The qualitative analysis reflects their opinion that they learned more and were motivated because of the opportunity to create learning material autonomously and collaboratively. There is also a trend of increased vocabulary learning frequency, especially with the support of digital tools.
A film in foreign language teaching has multiple functions and, with appropriate processing, can fulfil many different goals. The most important thing when using film in foreign language teaching is ...the realisation of educational and pedagogical goals. In this way, in addition to independent learning, another goal is achieved, which is the preparation of students for further independent life. The aim of this paper is to analyse the film "Good bye, Lenin!", which represents a good starting point for integration into the teaching of the German language, as it fulfils all the above-mentioned teaching objectives. The value of this film is also reflected in the fact that, after watching and analysing the film, the students better understand the material, the historical and cultural background, and that this can, in many ways, help them in their later interaction with members of that culture.
The aim of the paper is to examine the didactic potential of the visual narrative in manga for developing reading competence at the initial level of German language learning. A semi-structured group ...discussion was used as a data collection technique in our qualitative research. After the procedure of the semi-structured group discussion, the obtained data were categorized and analyzed. The results show that manga is a part of the authentic culture of the respondents in the period of early adolescence. The dialogue between the textual and images facilitates the construction of meaning and contributes to the development of the reading competence in students at the initial level of foreign language learning. Owing to the faithfulness of the figural representation and the semiotic functions of the specific animation style, manga readers are invited to recognize the emotions and cognitive processes of the characters, which puts the focus on affective factors and aesthetic competences, but also the use of reading strategies (global strategies, problem-solving strategies, and auxiliary strategies). Given that the meaning of the text and its interpretation derive from the image, the interpretation of the iconic elements is considered the first stage in learning to read, and visual narrative is a real need of today’s visual generation.
Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, this volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches and practical guidance for ...teaching at beginners level in the higher education classroom. At a time when entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages are decreasing, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in HE. Using the example of teaching German, it offers theoretical reflections on teaching ab initio and practice-oriented approaches that will be useful for teachers of both German and other languages in higher education. The first chapters assess the role of ab initio provision within the wider context of modern languages departments and language centres. They are followed by sections on teaching methods and innovative approaches in the ab initio classroom that include chapters on the use of music, textbook evaluation, the effective use of a flipped classroom and the contribution of language apps. Finally, the book focuses on the learner in the ab initio context and explores issues around autonomy and learner strengths. The whole builds into a theoretically grounded guide that sketches out perspectives for teaching and learning ab initio languages that will benefit current and future generations of students.
The topic of the article is a reflection on the possibilities of using short press texts in teaching foreign language phraseology. In the article, examples of exercises and tasks developing language ...skills and phraseological competence will be shown on the example of texts taken from German newspaper „Die Zeit“ (2012). The subject of the article meets the expectations of teachers as well as the postulates of phraseologists.
As the popularity of short-term teacher-facilitated language study abroad (SA) programs grows, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how classroom language-teaching methods can best be ...adapted to meet learners' overseas needs. However, adapting one's methods places high cognitive demands on teachers who may already be overburdened with the challenges of planning and organizing SA. The purpose of this study is to compare the experiences of novice, intermediate, and experienced teachers as they plan and facilitate short-term language SA in order to identify how their perceptions of effective practices differ and how newer facilitators can be best be helped. The results of a thematic narrative analysis of interviews with 21 participants point to three implications: providing more worked examples and macrostrategies for novice teachers; encouraging novice and intermediate teachers to rely on paid services; and collaborating with extensive social networks to reduce the individual teacher's cognitive load.
