While trying to preserve the autonomy of their playful activity consisting in a game of ‘questioning and answering’, the Gymnosophists defy Alexander the Great and, more importantly, go against their ...own chances of survival (since giving a wrong answer to the king’s question amounts to losing their life). Thankfully, we do not need to face such dilemmas when philosophising with children. Nevertheless, the Gymnosophists’ example helps construct a notion of philosophy for/with children as an autonomous playful activity that albeit (implicitly) purposive it is, however, without (explicit) purpose (something akin to Kant’s aesthetic judgement). Alluding to an Aristotelian sense of ‘'telos'’ in its connection with Platonic ‘'paideia'’ I understand philosophy for/with children as an activity that we carry out for its own sake. This does not mean that we are to abolish elements such as antagonism, competition, excellence, etc.―there is no question: the competitive element is there. But what does it mean? We could fix its meaning according to a purpose (we compete to excel or persuade and win) or we might entertain the idea of keeping its meaning rather vague or undetermined, implicit.

Prospection (Gilbert & Wilson, 2007), the representation of possible futures, is a ubiquitous feature of the human mind. Much psychological theory and practice, in contrast, has understood human ...action as determined by the past and viewed any such teleology (selection of action in light of goals) as a violation of natural law because the future cannot act on the present. Prospection involves no backward causation; rather, it is guidance not by the future itself but by present, evaluative representations of possible future states. These representations can be understood minimally as "If X, then Y" conditionals, and the process of prospection can be understood as the generation and evaluation of these conditionals. We review the history of the attempt to cast teleology out of science, culminating in the failures of behaviorism and psychoanalysis to account adequately for action without teleology. A wide range of evidence suggests that prospection is a central organizing feature of perception, cognition, affect, memory, motivation, and action. The authors speculate that prospection casts new light on why subjectivity is part of consciousness, what is "free" and "willing" in "free will," and on mental disorders and their treatment. Viewing behavior as driven by the past was a powerful framework that helped create scientific psychology, but accumulating evidence in a wide range of areas of research suggests a shift in framework, in which navigation into the future is seen as a core organizing principle of animal and human behavior.

Plato’s Symposium contains two accounts of eros which explicitly aim to reach a telos. The first is the technocratic account of the doctor Eryximachus, who seeks an exhaustive account of eros, common ...to all things with a physical nature. For him medical techne can create an orderly erotic harmony; while religion is defined as the curing of disorderly eros. Against this Socrates recounts the priestess Diotima finding a telos, not in technical exhaustiveness, but in a dialectical definition of eros in the light of the good. What is common to all human beings is the desire to be in eternal relation to the good. All technai are forms of poiesis, by which things pass from being to not being. The erotic harmony recommended by Eryximachus, no less than the Aristophanes” recommendation of eros as “of a half, or of a whole’, is subject to the question whether “it happens to be good’. A self-harmonisation produced by techne can no more evade the sovereignty of good, than can projects of self-completion with a beloved in our likeness.
Energy independence as the goal of EU energy policy encourages energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources (RES) implementation. Photovoltaic (PV) plants represent the usual technical ...solution when reconstructing/maintaining a roof or as an investment that is expected to result with a material gain. The viability of the investment is unquestionable, but when the means of implementation are provided by an external institution, a cost-effectiveness analysis is necessary. When a financial institution has no experience with similar projects, the complete TELOS analysis is required. This paper provides a complete TELOS analysis (Technology Feasibility, Economic, Legal, Operational and Schedule Feasibility) of the PV power plant implementation.
Addressing what is perhaps the biggest blind spot in leadership theory and practice, this article sets out to enshrine the pivotal role of purpose. First, it introduces the Telos Leadership Lens ...(TLL) consisting of the following principles:
1) Leadership is a responsibility of the many, not a privilege of the few
2) Leadership is the collective pursuit of delivering on purpose
3) Leadership purpose is to be guided by internal goods (exemplified by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals).
Second, the article further develops leadership ontology, 'the theory of entities that are thought to be most basic and essential to any statement about leadership', by shifting the focus to purpose. Third, emerging from these developments it identifies a new leadership model. Separately or in combination, these contributions can assist organizations in addressing current and future challenges, some of which are existential in nature as evidenced by the climate crisis, and others such as the Covid-19 pandemic potentially changing the way we live our lives and conduct our business. Although challenges of this scope can only be solved in partnership, the very nature of current leadership convention may obstruct or even prevent such partnerships from taking place in any meaningful way.
Leadership is by its very essence, directed towards the future. It may be understood as a process of influencing others to commit and dedicate themselves to future visions and goals (Yukl, 2010, p. ...26; Kotter, 1996, p. 9). Since the 1980s there has been emerging interest in practices, emphasizing practices as socially situated acts with sets of shared values, and internal and external goods. This article discusses to which extent it may be meaningful to interpret leadership as a socially embedded practice with a particular future goal, shaped by shared values. Drawing on the Neo-Aristotelian appeal to virtue ethics, promoted by Alasdair MacIntyre and others, several theologians have argued for the rediscovery of what they call ‘Christian practices.’ The article evaluates leadership as a possible ‘Christian’ practice drawing on the distinction between first tablet Christian practices and second tablet Christian practices, emphasizing the diaconal telos of the latter category.

Reflection on professional practice (either individually or in dialogue with peers or seniors) will often focus on doctors' skills. This approach emphasises compliance and competence. This paper ...suggests that an alternative and useful lens for professional reflection and development can be drawn from the framework of virtue ethics to encourage consideration of the ultimate purpose of medicine, and the character or virtues needed to be a good doctor. This alternative approach supports doctors to reflect on and develop their virtues, including practical wisdom, which orchestrates the doctor's skills and virtues. This emphasis on purpose and character within professional reflection promotes excellence, rather than just competency, and engages with what motivated most doctors to enter medicine.

In two recent papers, Rose and Nichols present evidence in favor of the view that humans represent category essences in terms of a telos, such as honey‐making, and not in terms of scientific ...essences, such as bee DNA. Here, I challenge their interpretation of the evidence and show that it is directly predicted by the main theory they seek to undermine. I argue that their results can be explained as instances of diagnostic reasoning about scientific essences.
En el presente trabajo nos proponemos analizar la nueva aproximación al narrativismo que realiza Alasdair Macintyre en su último libro: Ethics in the Conflicts of Modernity. An Essay on Desire, ...Practical Reasoning and Narrative (2016). En primer lugar, realizamos un recorrido histórico por las obras más significativas en las que MacIntyre desarrolla su visión del narrativismo en primera instancia: After Virtue. A Study in Moral Theory (1981), Whose Justice, Which Rationality? (1988) y Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry. Enciclopaedia, Genealogy and Tradition (1990).
