The continued interest in better EFL pedagogy for elementary school students has led to many interesting suggestions, one of which is TETE, Teaching English through English. Notwithstanding the ...importance of the method (policy), though, few studies have been conducted to describe and explain a non-native EFL teacher’s practice of TETE in the elementary school classroom. The present study, a case study of a Korean elementary school EFL teacher undertaken to fill the empirical gap, found that the teacher used both L1 and TL for many pedagogical reasons among which her attention to her students’ interest was principal. The study also revealed that her language use reflected the students’ perspectives.

Brain damage resulting from stroke and traumatic brain injury is the primary cause of complicated disability and one of the major causes of mortality in most countries, burdening healthcare systems ...owing to the growth in the number of brain injury victims. Rehabilitation is required to deal with the brain damage. With fewer therapists available, it is very challenging to manage patients and even motivate them to participate actively in their rehabilitation. Patients have frequently complained that many traditional rehabilitation systems are monotonous and uninteresting. The study's objective is to propose a telerehabilitation gaming system framework that can serve as guidance for developing an affordable rehabilitation gaming system that can motivate and engage patients and increase rehabilitation effectiveness. The research methodology is based on synthesizing related research and currently available technologies. The proposed framework includes the therapist and patient attached with vital constructs: tailoring tools, instructional content, game characteristics, tailored games, and performance. It is an internet-based communication structure that connects the Rehabilitation Gaming System to the hospital and other care provider networks. The proposed framework is evaluated by a panel of five experts. The results reveal that all experts believe that the proposed framework can serve as a useful guide for creating gaming interventions that can boost the patient's motivation and engagement and increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation.
Chelicerates constitute a basic arthropod group with fossil representatives from as early as the Cambrian period. Embryonic development and the subdivision of the segmented body region into a prosoma ...and an opisthosoma are very similar in all extant chelicerates. The mode of head segmentation, however, has long been controversial. Although all other arthropod groups show a subdivision of the head region into six segments, the chelicerates are thought to have the first antennal segment missing. To examine this problem on a molecular level, we have compared the expression pattern of Hox genes in the spider Cupiennius salei with the pattern known from insects. Surprisingly, we find that the anterior expression borders of the Hox genes are in the same register and the same relative segmental position as in Drosophila. This contradicts the view that the homologue of the first antennal segment is absent in the spider. Instead, our data suggest that the cheliceral segment is homologous to the first antennal segment and the pedipalpal segment is homologous to the second antennal (or intercalary) segment in arthropods. Our finding implies that chelicerates, myriapods, crustaceans, and insects share a single mode of head segmentation, reinforcing the argument for a monophyletic origin of the arthropods
Expression patterns of six homeobox containing genes in a model chelicerate the oribatid mite Archegozetes longisetosus, were examined to establish homology of chelicerate and insect head segments ...and to investigate claims that the chelicerate deutocerebral segment has been reduced or lost, engrailed (en) expression which has been used to demonstrate the presence of segments in insects fails to demonstrate a reduced deutocerebral segment. Expression patterns of the chelicerate homologs of the Drosophila genes Antennapedia (Antp), Sex combs reduced (Scr), Deformed (Dfd). proboscipedia (pb), and orthodenticle (otd) confirm direct correspondence of head segments. The chelicerate deutocerebral segment has not been reduced or lost. We make further inferences concerning the evolution of heads and Hox genes in arthropods
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effectiveness of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on 'Tete a Tete', 'Dutch Master', and 'Sweetness' narcissus (Narcissus pseudonarcissus). Ethephon ...foliar sprays (500 to 2500 mg.L(-1)) and substrate drenches of flurprimidol and paclobutrazol (0.25 to 4 mg/pot a.i.) did not control height during greenhouse forcing of 'Tete a Tete' at any concentration trialed. Stem stretch was controlled during postharvest evaluation with ethephon foliar sprays greater than or equal to 1000 mg.L(-1), flurprimidol substrate drenches greater than or equal to 0.5 mg/pot a.i., and paclobutrazol substrate drenches of 4 mg/pot a.i. A second experiment investigated preplant bulb soaks of flurprimidol (10 to 40 mg.L(-1)) applied to 'Dutch Master' and 'Tete a Tete' narcissus bulbs. Flurprimidol preplant bulb soaks controlled postharvest stretch on 'Tete a Tete' and 'Dutch Master' at concentrations greater than or equal to 15 and greater than or equal to 10 mg.L(-1), respectively. A third experiment was conducted with paclobutrazol (75 to 375 mg.L(-1)) on 'Tete a Tete' and 'Dutch Master' and three concentrations of flurprimidol on 'Sweetness' to determine optimal soak recommendations. Paclobutrazol preplant bulb soaks greater than or equal to 75 mg.L(-1) controlled postharvest stretch of 'Tete a Tete' and 'Dutch Master', while 37.5 mg.L(-1) of flurprimidol controlled postharvest stretch of 'Sweetness'. Based on the results of these experiments, growers can now select a PGR to help control excessive plant growth.

In social insects, colony-level complexity may emerge from simple individual-level behaviors and interactions. Emergent global properties such as colony size, which can be viewed as a consequence of ...life history traits, may influence individual-level behaviors themselves. The effects of colony size on productivity, body size, behavioral flexibility, and colony organization are examined here by considering colony size as an independent variable. Large colony size commonly corresponds with complex colony-level performance, small body size, and lower per capita productivity. Analyzing the construction behavior of various wasp societies reveals that complexity of individual behavior is inversely related to colony size. Parallel processing by specialists in large colonies provides flexible and efficient colony-level functioning. On the other hand, individual behavioral flexibility of jack-of-all trades workers ensures success of the small and early societies.
Objective: To evaluate whether zinc supplementation during pregnancy is associated with an increase in birth weight. Design: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Setting: Outpatient ...clinic and delivery service at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Patients: Five hundred eighty medically indigent but otherwise healthy African-American pregnant women with plasma zinc levels below the median at enrollment in prenatal care, randomized at 19 weeks' gestational age. Women were subdivided by the population median body mass index of 26 kg/m2 into two groups for additional analyses. Intervention: Women who were taking a non-zinc-containing prenatal multivitamin/mineral tablet were randomized to receive either a daily dose of 25 mg of zinc or a placebo until delivery. Main Outcome Measures: Birth weight, gestational age at birth, and head circumference at birth. Results: In all women, infants in the zinc supplement group had a significantly greater birth weight (126 g, P=.03) and head circumference (0.4 cm, P=.02) than infants in the placebo group. In women with a body mass index less than 26 kg/m2, zinc supplementation was associated with a 248-g higher infant birth weight (P=.005) and a 0.7-cm larger infant head circumference (P=.007). Plasma zinc concentrations were significantly higher in the zinc supplement group. Conclusions: Daily zinc supplementation in women with relatively low plasma zinc concentrations in early pregnancy is associated with greater infant birth weights and head circumferences, with the effect occurring predominantly in women with a body mass index less than 26 kg/m2.
