Objective: Kindergarten teacher ratings, such as those from the Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation-Revised (TOCA-R), are a promising cost- and time-effective screening method to identify ...children at risk for later problems. Previous research with the TOCA-R has been mainly limited to outcomes in a single domain measured during elementary school. The goal of the current study was to examine the ability of TOCA-R sum scores to predict outcomes in multiple domains across distinct developmental periods (i.e., late childhood, middle adolescence, late adolescence). Method: We used data from the Fast Track Project, a large multisite study with children at risk for conduct problems (n = 752; M age at start of study = 6.55 years; 57.7% male; 49.9% Caucasian, 46.3% African American). Kindergarten TOCA-R sum scores were used as the predictor in regression analyses; outcomes included school difficulties, externalizing diagnoses and symptom counts, and substance use. Results: TOCA-R sum scores predicted school outcomes at all time points, diagnosis of ADHD in 9th grade, several externalizing disorder symptom counts, and cigarette use in 12th grade. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the predictive utility of the TOCA-R when examining outcomes within the school setting. Therefore, these results suggest the 10-item TOCA-R may provide a quick and accurate screening of children at risk for later problems. Implications for prevention and intervention programs are discussed.
Litopterna is represented in the Pleistocene of the Brazilian Intertropical Region by a monospecific genus of Macraucheniidae, Xenorhinotherium. Although most of the knowledge about this family is ...derived from the dentition, some dental features still remain unknown. This study describes the eruption sequence of permanent dentition and classifies the hypsodonty status of X. bahiense. The specimens studied are from Toca dos Ossos, a limestone cave located in Bahia State. We perform qualitative macroscopic analysis to describe the eruption dental sequence. Additionally, we perform quantitative analysis to determine the hypsodonty index. The dental eruption sequence of the juvenile specimen is M1, M2, I1, I2, M3, I3, P1, P2, P3, and P4. In addition, the analysis of tooth wear in adult specimens provides similar results. The hypsodonty index assigns a mesodont tooth crown for X. bahiense. The dental eruption sequence is most similar to a rapid-growth extant mammal. Moreover, our results do not support afrotherian-like delayed dental eruption to Litopterna. The hypsodonty index can be related to data on vegetation of the Brazilian Intertropical Region and the shape of the premaxilla of X. bahiense, both of which suggest a browsing diet for this macraucheniid.
Toca 511 (vocimagene amiretrorepvec), an amphotropic retroviral replicating vector (RRV), can successfully and safely deliver a functional, optimized cytosine deaminase (CD) gene to tumors in ...orthotopic glioma models. This agent, in conjunction with subsequent oral extended-release 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) (Toca FC), is currently under investigation in patients with recurrent high-grade glioma . Temozolomide (TMZ) with radiation is the most frequently used first-line treatment for patients with glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive form of primary brain cancer in adults. However, subsets of patients with certain genetic alterations do not respond well to TMZ treatment and the overall median survival for patients who respond remains modest, suggesting that combinatorial approaches may be necessary to significantly improve outcomes. We show that in vitro TMZ delays but does not prevent RRV spread, nor interfere with Toca 511+5-FC-mediated cell killing in glioma tumor cells, and in vivo there is no significant hematologic effect from the combination of 5-FC and the clinically relevant dose of TMZ. A synergistic long-term survival advantage is observed in mice bearing an orthotopic TMZ-sensitive glioma after Toca 511 administration followed by coadministration of TMZ and 5-FC. These results provide support for the investigation of this novel combination treatment strategy in patients with newly diagnosed malignant glioma.
Carboniferous siliciclastic and silicic magmatic rocks from the
Santa Susana–São Cristovão and Cabrela regions contain valuable
information regarding the timing of synorogenic processes in SW Iberia. ...In
this region of the Ossa-Morena Zone (OMZ), late Carboniferous terrigenous
strata (i.e., the Santa Susana Formation) unconformably overlie early
Carboniferous marine siliciclastic deposits alternating with volcanic rocks
(i.e., the Toca da Moura volcano-sedimentary complex). Lying below this
intra-Carboniferous unconformity, the Toca da Moura volcano-sedimentary
complex is intruded and overlain by the Baleizão porphyry. Original
sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb zircon are presented in this paper, providing
chronostratigraphic and provenance constraints since available
geochronological information is scarce and only biostratigraphic ages are
currently available for the Santa Susana–São Cristovão region. Our
findings and the currently available detrital zircon ages from Paleozoic
terranes of SW Iberia (Pulo do Lobo Zone – PLZ – South Portuguese Zone – SPZ – and OMZ) were jointly analyzed using the K–S test and multidimensional scaling (MDS) diagrams to
investigate provenance. The marine deposition is constrained to the age
range of ca. 335–331 Ma (Visean) by new U–Pb data for silicic tuffs from the Toca da Moura and Cabrela volcano-sedimentary complexes. The
Baleizão porphyry, intrusive in the Toca da Moura volcano-sedimentary
complex, yielded a crystallization age of ca. 318 Ma (Bashkirian), providing
the minimum age for the overlying intra-Carboniferous unconformity. A
comparison of detrital zircon populations from siliciclastic rocks of the
Cabrela and Toca de Moura volcano-sedimentary complexes of the OMZ suggests
that they are derived from distinct sources more closely associated with the SPZ
and PLZ than the OMZ. Above the intra-Carboniferous unconformity, the Santa
Susana Formation is the result of the recycling of distinct sources
located either on the Laurussian side (SPZ and PLZ) or Gondwanan side (OMZ) of the
Rheic suture zone. The best estimate of the crystallization age of a granite
cobble which was found in a conglomerate from the Santa Susana Formation yielded ca. 303 Ma (Kasimovian–Gzhelian), representing the maximum depositional age for
the terrestrial strata. The intra-Carboniferous unconformity seems to
represent a stratigraphic gap of approximately 12–14 Myr, providing evidence
of the rapid post-accretion and collision uplift of the Variscan orogenic belt
in SW Iberia (i.e., the OMZ, PLZ, and SPZ).
The 110 °C TL glow peak of quartz has been used in dating and retrospective dosimetry due to the pre-dose effect and the sensitivity changes caused by heating. One of the main difficulties related to ...TL dating is the sureness that the geological signal was completely zeroed by firing. In this study, the sensitivity change of the 110 °C peak and the EPR signal intensity of the E1′ center were combined to account for the burning status of archaeological pebbles. For this, a quartz pebble was sawn into many pieces and each piece was heat-treated at different temperatures from 200 to 800 °C. Powdered aliquots were γ-irradiated and stored into an ice-bath before the TL readout. Peak-maximum temperature, TL intensity and activation energy of the 110 °C peak were determined by glow curve deconvolution methods. The thermal activation characteristic obtained in this study showed a peak maximum at 500 °C and a sensitization ratio higher than 200. The heating temperature also affected the intensity of the E1′ center. The usefulness of the burning pattern was tested by measuring the TL and EPR signals of several archaeological pebbles, initially classified as “burnt”, “unburnt” or “unidentified”, and also from two specimens burnt in a campfire. The main achievement of this study was the possibility to infer the temperature in which a pebble was heated in the past independent of visual signs.
•Quartz 110 °C TL peak and E1′ EPR signal were measured in burnt and unburnt pebbles.•TAC of quartz pebbles from Boqueirão da Pedra Furada shelter was shown.•A pattern to estimate the burning temperature of archaeological pebbles was proposed.
A recently developed (18)F-labeled PET tracer for somatostatin receptor (sstr) imaging, N(alpha)-(1-deoxy-D-fructosyl)-N(epsilon)-(2-(18)Ffluoropropionyl)-Lys(0)-Tyr(3)-octreotate ...(Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA), was evaluated in patients with sstr-positive tumors by assessing the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and diagnostic performance in comparison with (111)InDTPA-octreotide.
Twenty-five patients with different sstr-positive tumors were included in the study and were injected with 105 +/- 50 MBq Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA. PET was performed up to 120 min with 2 different dynamic imaging protocols. Tracer kinetics in tumors and nontumor tissues and tumor-to-background ratios were described by region-of-interest analysis and standardized uptake values (SUVs). In 16 patients, sstr scintigraphy with (111)InDTPA-octreotide was performed (whole-body scans and SPECT). Two independent experts on PET and gamma- camera scans performed lesion counts.
Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA showed a fast and intense tumor accumulation as well as a rapid clearance from blood serum (biexponential elimination, with the half-lives of the initial and the terminal elimination phase calculated as t(1/2)(1) = 2.3 +/- 1.3 min and t(1/2)(2) = 26.4 +/- 14.6 min, respectively). Tumor-to-background ratios at 16 +/- 9 min and 34 +/- 12 min were as high as 80% and 90% (% of maximum ratios), respectively. Tumors showed high SUVs ranging from 13.7 +/- 2.3 (tumors in lung) up to 26.9 +/- 15.4 (abdominal tumors). Tracer distribution within tumor and nontumor tissues was stable up to 120 min (except spleen). No significant bowel activity was observed. Comparison of 29 tumors located in the liver showed a mean tumor-to-background ratio of 5.3 +/- 2.6 for Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA vs. 4.6 +/- 3.3 for (111)InDTPA-octreotide (P = 0.24). Visual image analysis revealed a significantly higher number of lesions (factor of 2.4) and improved interobserver correlation (r = 0.99 vs. 0.86) for PET.
Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA PET allows a fast, high- contrast imaging of sstr-positive tumors. The biokinetics and diagnostic performance of Gluc-Lys((18)FFP)-TOCA are superior to (111)InDTPA-octreotide and-as far as can be derived from the literature-comparable with (68)Ga-DOTA-d Phe(1)-Tyr(3)-octreotide ((68)GaDOTATOC).
We presented time series of total ozone column amounts (TOCAs) and erythemal UV (EUV) doses derived from measurements by TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) instruments on board the Nimbus-7 (N7) ...and the Earth Probe (EP) satellites for three locations within the equatorial African belt for the period 1979 to 2000. The locations were Dar-es-Salaam (6.8° S, 39.26° E) in Tanzania, Kampala (0.19° N, 32.34° E) in Uganda, and Serrekunda (13.28° N, 16.34° W) in Gambia. Equatorial Africa has high levels of UV radiation, and because ozone shields UV radiation from reaching the Earth's surface, there is a need to monitor TOCAs and EUV doses. In this paper we investigated the trend of TOCAs and EUV doses, the effects of annual and solar cycles on TOCAs, as well as the link between lightning and ozone production in the equatorial African belt. We also compared clear-sky simulated EUV doses with the corresponding EUV doses derived from TOMS measurements. The TOCAs were found to vary in the ranges 243 DU - 289 DU, 231 DU - 286 DU, and 236 DU - 296 DU, with mean values of 266.9 DU, 260.9 DU, and 267.8 DU for Dar-es-Salaam, Kampala and Serrekunda, respectively. Daily TOCA time series indicated that Kampala had the lowest TOCA values, which we attributed to the altitude effect. There were two annual ozone peaks in Dar-es-Salaam and Kampala, and one annual ozone peak in Serrekunda. The yearly TOCA averages showed an oscillation within a five-year period. We also found that the EUV doses were stable at all three locations for the period 1979-2000, and that Kampala and Dar-es-Salaam were mostly cloudy throughout the year, whereas Serrekunda was mostly free from clouds. It was also found that clouds were among the major factors determining the level of EUV reaching the Earth's surface. Finally, we noted that during rainy seasons, horizontal advection effects augmented by lightning activity may be responsible for enhanced ozone production in the tropics.
