Abstract
Introduction
Slow-wave activity (SWA) shows an inverted U-shaped time course during development. Specifically, maximal SWA undergoes a posteroanterior shift from 2 to 20 years of age, which ...may reflect cortical maturation. Previously, we showed that greater slow sigma power during sleep predicted faster reaction time in preschool-aged children. To date, little is known about the relationship between SWA and processing speed (PS), a basic fundament underlying complex cognitive skills in early development.
Methods
This project examined the relationship between SWA and PS in 2.5-3.0-year-old children (n=26, 50% males) via home-based assessments. After a 5-day stabilization sleep schedule, a baseline sleep EEG recording was performed on participants at 4 electrode placements: Fz, Oz, C3, and C4. SWA EEG spectral power was quantified in the 0.75-4.5 Hz rangeduring the first 60 minutes of NREM sleep. PS was obtained as part of a standard cognitive assessment via a computer-based task one hour after waking from a midday nap.
Results
On average, reaction time (PS) was 2111 ± 08 ms and SWA was 856.4 ± 300.7 µV2/Hz. Increased SWA in the occipital region was predictive of a longer reaction time and therefore slower PS (r = 0.44, p = 0.03). This relationship showed differences between sexes, suggesting that females (r = 0.26, p = 0.07) may show a stronger association between SWA in the occipital brain region and PS than males (r = 0.09, p = 0.33).
Conclusion
Interestingly, these findings contradict our hypothesis based on previous data with older children indicating that greater SWA was associated with more advanced behavioral and cognitive skills. This discrepancy may reflect the stark individual differences present within this rapidly maturing age group.

AbstractBackground: Stunting is one priority problem in Indonesia. The incidence of stunting in toddlers at the Tambak Wedi Public Health Center Surabaya in 2015 and 2016 were 31.3% and 33%, ...respectively. This study aims to analyze the risk factors for stunting in toddlers aged 24-59 months in Tambak Wedi Health Center Surabaya. Method: This observational analytic research used cross sectional approach. The population in this study was 220 and the sample size was 110 mothers and toddlers. Samples were selected by proportional cluster random sampling from the population of 220 pairs mothers and toddlers. Independent variables of the mothers include height, upper arm circumference, frequency of ANC visits, weight gain during pregnancy, meanwhile of the toddlers included birth length and birth weight. The dependent variable was stunting. Statistical analysis used chi-square and multiple logistic regression tests. Results: There were 100 pairs of mother and toddlers in the study. Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between maternal height (p = 0.025, RR = 0.406), frequency of ANC visits (p = 0.017, RR = 0.382), increase in maternal weight during pregnancy (p = 0.017, RR = 0.328), the baby’s birth length (p = <0.001, RR = 0.256), and the baby's birth weight (p = <0.001, RR = 0.208) with stunting. Multivariate analysis showed maternal height and ANC visit as the significant risk factors of stunting. Conclusion: Maternal height and the frequency of ANC visits were the risk factors for stunting among toddlers aged 24-59 months in Tambak Wedi Public Health Center in Surabaya.

One of ...the factors that influence a child's development is parenting, which is the pattern of interaction between parents and children. Early detection of development needs to be done in order to know deviations in development. Method: This research method used an observational analytic cross-sectional study design. The number of samples was 69 toddlers with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. The independent variable is parenting and the dependent variable is child development. The instruments used were parenting questionnaire and child development questionnaire, namely KPSP. Data analysis technique used was the spearman with α = 0.05 and the analysis of the closeness of the two relationships using correlation coefficient. Results: The results showed that there were 33.3% of respondents with permissive parenting had developmental status in accordance with or normal with their age, parents with democratic parenting also had 53.7% of respondents whose development was in accordance with or normal with their age, while authoritarian parenting there are 40.0% of respondents who are appropriate or normal for their age. Spearmen test results are known for each parenting, namely permissive parenting with p value 0.928, democratic parenting with p value 0.023, and authoritarian parenting with p value 0.420. Conclusion: the data shows that there is a relationship between parenting and developmental patterns, those are democratic parenting and permissive parenting.Keywords: child development, parenting, toddlers
This study examines the prevalence of cognitive delay among infants and toddlers in rural China and its relationship with one of the potential sources of the observed delay: low levels of stimulating ...parenting practices (SPPs). Data were compiled from five distinct studies, resulting in a pooled sample of 4436 caregivers of 6-29-month-old infants. The sampling sites span five provinces in rural China. According to the data, on average, rates of delay are high-51 percent. The low rates of SPPs among our sample demonstrate that this may be one source of the high prevalence of delays. The results of the multivariate regression analysis reveal that reading books and singing songs are each significantly associated with an increase in infant cognitive score by 1.62 points (
= 0.003) and 2.00 points (
< 0.001), respectively. Telling stories to infants, however, is not significantly associated with infant cognitive scores. Our findings indicate that caregivers with different characteristics engage in various levels of stimulating practices and have infants with different rates of delay. Specifically, infants of better-educated mothers who have greater household assets are in families in which the caregivers provide more SPPs and have infants who score higher on the study's cognitive abilities scales.
Healthy food consumption patterns in early childhood support optimal growth and development and promote lifelong health.
The objective of the Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS) 2016 is to ...provide updated information on food consumption patterns of children aged 0 to <4 y. This article focuses on several key aspects of the food consumption patterns of 2- and 3-y-olds and how those patterns differ between racial/ethnic groups.
The FITS 2016 is a cross-sectional study in caregivers of children aged 0 to <4 y living in the United States. Dietary data were collected in a national random sample of children (n = 3235, of whom 600 were aged 24–47.9 mo) by using a 24-h dietary recall telephone survey with the primary caregiver of the child. Data from the recall were used to calculate the percentage of children consuming specific food groups on the day of the recall and energy from these foods (kilocalories per consumer). Differences in food patterns between racial/ethnic groups were analyzed by using ANOVA and t tests.
On the day of the 24-h dietary recall, 27% of 2- and 3-y-olds did not consume a distinct portion of vegetables. Fried potatoes were the most commonly consumed vegetable. Approximately 75% consumed a distinct portion of fruit and 45% consumed 100% fruit juice. Eighty-one percent of children consumed cow milk. Almost all (95%) consumed a grain product, and 59% consumed a whole grain–rich product. The majority of children (88%) consumed meat or another protein food. Nearly all (90%) consumed a dessert, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB), or sweet; and 45% consumed an SSB. Thirty-six percent of children consumed a savory snack. There were some differences in food consumption patterns between racial/ethnic groups.
Findings from the FITS 2016 indicate that individual-, community-, and policy-level strategies are needed to improve the diets of young children in the United States.

Technology is pervasive in homes of families with young children, despite evidence for negative associations between infant exposure to screen‐based media and cognitive development that has led the ...American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to discourage parents from exposing children under the age of 18 months to any kind of screen time (AAP, 2016). Here, we apply a propensity score matching approach to estimate relations between electronic screen‐based media use in infancy and executive function in early toddlerhood. In an international sample of 416 firstborn infants, parental report of regular exposure to screen‐based media at 4 months predicted poorer performance on a test of inhibition at 14 months, but was unrelated to either cognitive flexibility or working memory at 14 months. Results of this study are therefore consistent with the view that early exposure to screen‐based media adversely affects the development of executive function.
Objective Subdural hematoma in infants or toddlers has often been linked to abuse, but it is not clear how many cases actually occur and how many are suspected of abuse. The purpose of this study was ...to investigate subdural hematoma in infants and toddlers in Japan. Methods This multicenter, retrospective study reviewed the clinical records of children younger than 4 years with head trauma who were diagnosed with any finding on head computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as skull fracture and/or intracranial injury. A total of 452 children were included. The group suspected to have been abused was classified as nonaccidental, and the group considered to have been caused by an accident was classified as accidental. Subdural hematoma and other factors were examined on multivariate analysis to identify which factors increase the risk of nonaccidental injuries. Results Of the 452 patients, 158 were diagnosed with subdural hematoma. Subdural hematoma was the most common finding intracranial finding in head trauma in infants and toddlers. A total of 51 patients were classified into the nonaccidental group, and 107 patients were classified into the accidental group. The age of patients with subdural hematoma showed a bimodal pattern. The mean age of the accidental group with subdural hematoma was significantly older than that in the nonaccidental group (10.2 months vs 5.9 months, respectively. p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that patients under 5 months old, retinal hemorrhage, and seizure were significant risk factors for nonaccidental injury (odds ratio (OR) 3.86, p = 0.0011; OR 7.63, p < 0.001; OR 2.49, p = 0.03; respectively). On the other hand, the odds ratio for subdural hematoma was 1.96, and no significant difference was observed (p = 0.34). Conclusions At least in Japanese children, infantile subdural hematoma was frequently observed not only in nonaccidental but also in accidental injuries. In infants with head trauma, age, the presence of retinal hemorrhage, and the presence of seizures should be considered when determining whether they were abused. Subdural hematoma is also a powerful finding to detect abuse, but care should be taken because, in some ethnic groups, such as the Japanese, there are many accidental cases.

Introduction: Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that can grow fast due to its transmissibility through aerosols. One of the countries with the highest tuberculosis rates is Indonesia with a case ...fatality rate of 11.59%. This study's objective was to examine the relationship between the physical condition of the house and the immune system and the incidence of tuberculosis in toddlers in Surabaya. Methods: This study used an analytic survey research design with a case control research methodology. The case population consisted of pediatric patients aged 0-5 years who were clinically diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. The Chi-Square test was used to analyze bivariate data with a confidence level of 0.05 (α = 5%). Results and Discussion: The physical condition of the house that influenced the incidence of tuberculosis in toddlers were room temperature (p = 0.009; OR = 8.300; CI = 1.480-46.936) and room humidity (p = 0.000; OR = 7.600; CI = 1.609-35.906) while the immune system that affected the incidence of tuberculosis in toddlers were history of tuberculosis sufferers in the family (p = 0.018; OR = 6.000; CI = 1.266-28.498) and exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.003; OR = 10.000; CI = 1.998-50.042). Conclusion: Houses with inadequate room temperature and humidity have an increased risk of tuberculosis development. Moreover, tuberculosis risk factors include a history of exclusive breastfeeding and a family history of tuberculosis. Health promotion by community health centers is expected to increase awareness of pediatric tuberculosis.
Introduction: The Tuban Regency Health Profile in 2019 stated that the villages with ODF status had reached 64 villages (19.5%) out of 328 total villages, while the villages reported having ...implemented Community-Based Total Sanitation (CBTS) have reached 100%. The low ODF status achieved indicates that most people still defecate openly, which will increase health risks due to environmental pollution. This study aimed to determine the distribution map of diarrhea in toddlers in each district of Tuban Regency in 2019. Methods: This study was an observational research type supported by mapping through an application with a cross-sectional research design. This study was all districts in Tuban Regency. Data were obtained from secondary data, which were the Tuban Regency Health Profile in 2019. Results and Discussion: The percentage of latrine ownership was 71.15%, the open defecation was 70%, the percentage of children under five was not more than 14.69%, and cases of diarrhea among toddlers were relatively diverse in each district with the lowest number of cases was 0, and the highest number of cases was 841. Conclusion: Diarrhea in toddlers was commonly distributed in the Eastern and Southeastern Tuban Regency, directly adjacent to the Bengawan Solo River. There was a strong possibility that the occurrence of diarrhea was related to the water quality of Bengawan Solo River that was consumed for daily household activities.
