Recently, the hybrid convolutional neural network hidden Markov model (CNN-HMM) has been introduced for offline handwritten Chinese text recognition (HCTR) and has achieved state-of-the-art ...performance. However, modeling each of the large vocabulary of Chinese characters with a uniform and fixed number of hidden states requires high memory and computational costs and makes the tens of thousands of HMM state classes confusing. Another key issue of CNN-HMM for HCTR is the diversified writing style, which leads to model strain and a significant performance decline for specific writers. To address these issues, we propose a writer-aware CNN based on parsimonious HMM (WCNN-PHMM). First, PHMM is designed using a data-driven state-tying algorithm to greatly reduce the total number of HMM states, which not only yields a compact CNN by state sharing of the same or similar radicals among different Chinese characters but also improves the recognition accuracy due to the more accurate modeling of tied states and the lower confusion among them. Second, WCNN integrates each convolutional layer with one adaptive layer fed by a writer-dependent vector, namely, the writer code, to extract the irrelevant variability in writer information to improve recognition performance. The parameters of writer-adaptive layers are jointly optimized with other network parameters in the training stage, while a multiple-pass decoding strategy is adopted to learn the writer code and generate recognition results. Validated on the ICDAR 2013 competition of CASIA-HWDB database, the more compact WCNN-PHMM of a 7360-class vocabulary can achieve a relative character error rate (CER) reduction of 16.6% over the conventional CNN-HMM without considering language modeling. By adopting a powerful hybrid language model (N-gram language model and recurrent neural network language model), the CER of WCNN-PHMM is reduced to 3.17%. Moreover, the state-tying results of PHMM explicitly show the information sharing among similar characters and the confusion reduction of tied state classes. Finally, we visualize the learned writer codes and demonstrate the strong relationship with the writing styles of different writers. To the best of our knowledge, WCNN-PHMM yields the best results on the ICDAR 2013 competition set, demonstrating its power when enlarging the size of the character vocabulary.
This paper provides a detailed review of evaluation standards for the legal assessment of tying. This practice, which constitutes an abuse of a dominant position, is a significant breach of ...competition law. The mechanism of this type of abuse is based on taking advantage of market power in the supply of one product to create packed offerings capable of precluding competition from superior rival solutions. Tying occurs when one product, the “tying product”, is sold only with another product, the “tied product”. In the prevailing number of cases, tying serves to consolidate the company’s dominant position on the tied product market, which usually aims to share the tying product’s large customer group with the less-desired product. However, tying is not illegal per se. In many cases, it does not lead to any anti-competitive concerns, and might be beneficial for consumers. This is why each assessment of this conduct must be carefully evaluated with special attention given to the effects, in accordance with the generally applied effect-based approach, and also potential efficiencies. An analysis of the case-law and literature reveals the basic mechanisms for conducting a legal assessment of tying. However, the use of these mechanisms will not be possible without their adaptation to the ongoing changes caused by technological development. Digital markets not only generate incremental revenues, but are also the sources of new or unusual legal arrangements. It will more frequently be the case that existing provisions will not be able to address every new practice accurately without new acts. The Digital Markets Act aims to adapt the existing legal framework to contemporary market realities and to become a modern tool for enforcing competition law rules on digital markets. The European Commission is seeking to broaden its powers to intervene at the earliest possible stage, before an undertaking affects the competition on a market.

Tying arrangements, a central concern of antitrust policy since the early days of the Sherman and Clayton Acts, have come into renewed focus with respect to the practices of dominant technology ...companies. Unfortunately, tying law's doctrinal structure is a self-contradictory and incoherent wreck. A conventional view holds that this mess is due to errant Supreme Court precedents, never fully corrected, that expressed hostility to tying based on faulty economic understanding. That is only part of the story. Examination of tying law's origins and development shows that tying doctrine was built on a now-dated paradigm of what constitutes a tying arrangement. In its origins during the industrial age, tying meant the leverage of patent rights over one good to impose requirements contracts forcing the purchase of a second, unpatented good. That paradigm no longer describes the vast majority of tying arrangements challenged under the antitrust laws. Instead, digital-age tying claims tend to involve product design decisions, the integration of technologies, the bundling of components, considerations of product functionality and performance, and the economic terms on which companies can obtain a return on their research and development investments. Correcting the mess in tying law requires not only updating economic learning, but also appreciating the patterns of behavior to which tying standards are applied.
Background
An E321G mutation in MYH1 was recently identified in Quarter Horses (QH) with immune‐mediated myositis (IMM) defined by a phenotype of gross muscle atrophy and myofiber lymphocytic ...infiltrates.
Hypothesis/Objectives
We hypothesized that the MYH1 mutation also was associated with a phenotype of nonexertional rhabdomyolysis. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of the MYH1 mutation in QH with exertional (ER) and nonexertional (nonER) rhabdomyolysis.
Animals
Quarter Horses: 72 healthy controls, 85 ER‐no atrophy, 56 ER‐atrophy, 167 nonER horses selected regardless of muscle atrophy.
Methods
Clinical and histopathologic information and DNA was obtained from a database for (1) ER > 2 years of age, with or without atrophy and (2) nonER creatine kinase (CK) ≥ 5000 U/L, <5 years of age. Horses were genotyped for E321G MYH1 by pyrosequencing.
Results
The MYH1 mutation was present in a similar proportion of ER‐no atrophy (1/56; 2%) and in a higher proportion of ER‐atrophy (25/85; 29%) versus controls (4/72; 5%). The MYH1 mutation was present in a significantly higher proportion of nonER (113/165; 68%) than controls either in the presence (39/42; 93%) or in absence (72/123; 59%) of gross atrophy. Lymphocytes were present in <18% of muscle samples with the MYH1 mutation.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance
Although not associated with ER, the MYH1 mutation is associated with atrophy after ER. The MYH1 mutation is highly associated with nonER regardless of whether muscle atrophy or lymphocytic infiltrates are present. Genetic testing will enhance the ability to diagnose MYH1 myopathies (MYHM) in QH.
Adjustable femoral suspensory fixation for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) become popular in recent years. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes ...of three different techniques using an adjustable-loop fixation in ACRL.
This study included 38 patients who underwent ACLR using the adjustable-loop device for femoral fixation between January 2018 and November 2021. All the participants were randomly assigned to a standard (group 1), retensioning (group 2), retensioning and knot tying (group 3). Clinical outcome parametres included Tegner – Lysholm Score, IKDC score, KT-1000 displacement and isokinetic muscle function tests.
Overall, 38 patients (group 1: n = 13 mean ± SD age, 30.1 ± 9.40 years; group 2: n = 12 mean ± SD age, 24.5 ± 7.79 years; group 3 = 13 mean ± SD age, 27.8 ± 6.59 years) were included in the final analysis. The follow-up period was 9.7 ± 1.2; 9.5 ± 1.7 and 10 ± 1.5 months for groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. From preoperatively to postoperatively, the mean Tegner-Lysholm scores improved significantly in all three groups (group 1: from 63.5 to 95.6; group 2: from 61.58 to 98.5; group 3: from 66.6 to 95.9, P < 0.0001 for all), as did the mean IKDC score (group 1: 53.9–88.8; group 2: 61.3–94.9; group 3: 60.7–94.6 (P < 0.0001 for all).
The retensioning with or without knot-tying method is believed to increase stability in graft fixation. However, there were no significant differences in clinical outcomes in each technique.
Though conventional thoracoscopic plication is a favorable option of diaphragmatic eventration (DE), ribs limited the movement of trocars, making it difficult to suturing, knot-tying and ...time-consuming. The purpose of this study was to evaluate delicate surgical maneuvers and suturing time for the management of DE in robot-assisted thoracoscopic plication (RATP).
From January 2015 to November 2019, 20 patients (14 males; mean age: 10.5 ± 5.2 months; mean weight: 8.6 ± 4.5 kg) who underwent diaphragmatic plication for DE were reviewed at our institution. There were 13 patients with congenital diaphragmatic eventration and 7 patients with acquired diaphragm eventration after congenital heart surgery. RATP was performed on 9 patients (3 on the left and 6 on the right), and conventional thoracoscopic plication (CTP) was applied to 11 patients (5 on the left and 6 on the right). Demographics, the suturing time and complications were respectively evaluated.
There was no difference between 2 groups with respect to gender, age at surgery and weight (p > 0.05). No conversion to thoracotomy was needed. The suturing time in RATP group was shorter than CTP group (27.7 ± 3.4 min vs 48.1 ± 4.2 min, p < 0.001). One patient (9.09%) experienced recurrence in CTP group and none was found in RATP group.
Diaphragmatic plication with robot-assisted thoracoscopy or conventional thoracoscopy in DE has minimally invasive and good effect on children. RATP overcome the intercostal limitations to complete delicate suturing and free knot-tying, and has better ergonomics.

Cat's claw creeper, Dolichandra unguis‐cati (Bignoniaceae), a perennial woody vine native to tropical America, is a target for biological control in Australia and South Africa. The cat's claw creeper ...leaf‐tying moth Hypocosmia pyrochroma (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) from tropical South America was released as a biological control agent for cat's claw creeper in Australia from 2007 to 2010. A total of 2,277 adults, 837 pupae and 77,250 larvae were released at 40 sites in Queensland and New South Wales. Releases were made mostly in open fields (85%), and at limited sites (15%) in insect‐proof cages erected over naturally occurring cat's claw creeper infestations in the field. Sampling was conducted annually in spring and autumn to monitor the establishment and dispersal of H. pyrochroma. Establishment of H. pyrochroma was first noticed in 2012 at three release sites and since then the number of established sites has increased to 80 in 2020. Establishment was evident on both ‘short‐pod’ and ‘long‐pod’ forms of cat's claw creeper and was more widespread in sites where releases were made within insect‐proof field cages (50%) than in sites with open field releases (9%). The moth was active from late spring to late autumn with peak larval activity in late summer. To date, all field establishments have been in areas predicted by a CLIMEX model as climatically suitable but restricted mostly to riparian environment (93% of establishment), where the moth has continued to spread from 1.5 to 23 km from release sites. In contrast, there is the only limited establishment and spread in non‐riparian corridors, highlighting the role of microclimate (riparian) as a limiting factor for establishment and spread. Future efforts will focus on redistribution of the agent to river/creek systems where the moth is currently not present.

We show that the incentive to engage in exclusionary tying (of two complementary products) may arise even when tying cannot be used as a defensive strategy to protect the incumbent’s dominant position in the primary market. By engaging in tying, an incumbent firm sacrifices current profits but can exclude a more efficient rival from a complementary market by depriving it of the critical scale it needs to be successful. In turn, exclusion in the complementary market allows the incumbent to be in a favorable position when a more efficient rival will enter the primary market, and to appropriate some of the rival’s efficiency rents. The paper also shows that tying is a more profitable exclusionary strategy than pure bundling, and that exclusion is the less likely the higher the proportion of consumers who multi-home.
