As online learners are increasingly diverse, making online learning more inclusive becomes an urgent need. Universal design has been perceived as a viable framework to reach the widest possible range ...of learners. However, applying universal design to online education has been a challenge to instructors due to different barriers. It is also unclear what evidence-based strategies can be infused into online education. In this systematic review, we selected and analyzed relevant studies and synthesized their designs and findings to explore the trends, strategies, impacts, challenges, and instructors' and students' attitudes toward applying universal design in online environments. We discuss implications for research and practice.
Research retreats are elements of scientific graduate training programs. Although expected to provide strong educational value, some students are reluctant to attend. Here, we identify participation ...barriers and provide guidelines for retreat design that minimize obstacles and establish an inclusive environment to improve attendance and enrichment for all attendees.

Universal design for learning (UDL) has gained considerable attention in the field of special education, acclaimed for its promise to promote inclusion by supporting access to the general curriculum. ...In addition to UDL, there are two other universal design (UD) educational models referenced in the literature, universal design of instruction (UDI) and universal instructional design (UID). This descriptive review of 13 research studies conducted in pre-K–12 and post-secondary settings examined how researchers are applying and evaluating UD in educational settings. Results of the review illustrated that studies use a range of research designs to examine student outcomes and participant perceptions of UD-based curriculum and instruction. Researchers report on their application of UD principles in varied ways, with no standard formats for describing how UD is used. Based on results of the review, we provide recommendations to help establish a meaningful research base on the validity of UD in education.
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of hotel features on perceptions of stress and usability across groups of healthy adults, older adults, and wheelchair users. Participants completed a ...guided walkthrough of a hotel that included tasks in the room, bathroom, and lobby. The older adults had the lowest level of perceived stress, whereas the wheelchair users had the lowest rating of usability. The healthy group had generally positive perspectives on the hotel features, while the wheelchair users had predominantly negative comments. Subjects’ concerns ranged from more leisure concerns, such as not having access to preferred television shows (healthy group), to difficulty with accessibility of basic room features such as stepping into the shower area (older adults) and opening the room door (wheelchair users). Although inclusive design may pose a challenge to hotel managers and designers, it is necessary to ensure all guests have access to basic features.
Learning that "career" was not a definite sign in Irish Sign Language (ISL) and that "Career Guidance" was poorly understood by the Deaf community prompted a systematic literature review (SLR). An ...uncomfortable truth relating to Career Guidance emerged - "Inclusion" is not where we presume it to be at.
This paper presents the results of the SLR and shares how the answers from a thematic analysis can - through a Universal Design (UD), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (Rose & Meyer, 2002) lens - guide developments for inclusive Career Guidance.
This paper shares the story of "d/Deaf guidance" in the literature; the tensions between theory and practice in relation to inclusion (Quirke, 2022), and the themes identified from the SLR - themes the Deaf community believe are a Deaf gain.
