A watching brief was undertaken during construction of a new cycle bridge over the River Walkham. The bridge was located adjacent to the site of a demolished viaduct constructed by Isambard Kingdon ...Brunel in 1859. The remains of three of the viaduct piers were partially exposed, as was a short length of leat associated with nearby 19th-century mines.
An evaluation was carried out within railway arches below the present, disused viaduct adjacent to Lee Street. Two trenches were excavated. A brick well and drain of 18th-19th century date are ...evidence of buildings cleared for construction of the railway in c.1870. These cut post-medieval land-raising dumps, which overlie an agricultural soil horizon and natural brickearth.
A special study has been performed to derive the necessity to provide a windshield on a viaduct located in a windy area. The study, based on bibliographic analysis and on the characteristics of the ...wind on the site, concluded that the wind-shield was necessary. Aerodynamic and aero-acoustic tests were performed in order to select and qualify the wind-shield.
