The paper’s subject examines the role of open spaces in restructuring the Cerak Vinogradi housing estate, planned and built in Belgrade in period 1977-1985. The paper provides a historical ...comparative analysis with an overview of spatial processes on the one hand and social processes on the other through identification of the role of open spaces in the structure of the Cerak Vinogradi housing estate from its construction to the present day. Spatial processes are shown through a mapping of the urbomorphological processes of open-space transformations, while social processes include a review of the regulatory framework: the laws, regulations, and plans that led to visible changes in space. The work aims to establish the stages of morphogenesis in which there occurred a paradigm shift in the management and use of open spaces of the housing estate.
This paper deals with the decades-long legacy of Darko and Milenija Marušić, a married couple who were both architects. Their lives' work is closely connected to the institution in which they both ...worked for many years; the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of Serbia, in Belgrade. With their work in this institution, they primarily focused on the construction of residential buildings, although other types of buildings can also be found among their opus. This paper presents their most significant achievements, and through them shows the value of this married and authorial couple, whose work exhibits both Modernist and Postmodernist tendencies. What undeniably sets these authors apart is their accomplishment of innovative forms and functionalist solutions, all aimed at creating objects both tailored to human needs and in harmony with the natural environment. This research aims to introduce a wider audience to these elements and characteristics, and to raise awareness of the importance of these authors and their works.
The text presents several important realizations of architects Milenija and Darko Marušić, which marked their joint work in the Institute of Architecture and Urban&Spatial Planning of Serbia (IAUS). ...The occasion is a great success of one of their most significant designs - the Cerak-Vinogradi residential settlement in Belgrade, which they co-authored with architect Nedeljko Borovnica in the Institute in 1977-1983. (realized in 1979-1988.) The spatial cultural-historical entity of 'The Cerak-Vinogradi settlement (Cerak 1 and Cerak 2)' was declared in 2019 a cultural property of the Republic of Serbia, becoming the only protected settlement of the contemporary architecture in this part of Europe. In addition, the Cerak-Vinogradi settlement was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 2019, following the exhibition 'Toward a Concrete Utopia - Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980' (July 2018 - January 2019). Thus, this year, 2019, the Cerak-Vinogradi settlement was affirmed both as a national and a part of the international cultural heritage. In addition to the Cerak settlement, the text also gives a brief overview of the following designs: 'Plava ptica' kindergarten, built in the Cerak settlement in 2011 (designed 2009-2010); residentialcommercial buildings at 179-181 Bulevar kralja Aleksandra St. in Belgrade, built in 1992-2000 (designed 1989-1991) and at 63-67 Bulevar oslobođenja in Novi Sad, built in 1991-1998 (designed 1989-1992); 'Cvećara' group of family houses in Belgrade, built in 1991-1993 (designed 1990-1991, co-authored with architect Željko Gašparović) and the administrative-business building of 'Metals' bank in Novi Sad, built in 2005-2007 (designed 2000-2006, after the competition won in 1989).
Agricultural terraces are the predominant landscape element in the Goriška brda region. These were once made by hand, but started being built mechanically after the Second World War. Reshaping slopes ...into terraces increases the amount of arable farmland. Farming, especially cultivation of vineyards and orchards, is still the most important industry in this region. The development of winegrowing has indelibly marked the image of the cultural landscape here.Terraces are mostly being abandoned in regions with market-oriented mechanized farming. Much of the formerly terraced land in upper Goriška brda is now completely overgrown or deteriorated. The former extent of these agricultural terraces cannot even be precisely determined using the land cadastre carried out under Emperor Franz I. In contrast, the agricultural terraces in lower Goriška brda are being constantly renovated.Maintenance of terraces prevents water loss and reduces soil erosion. When the shape of hillsides is changed, large quantities of soil are moved, and steep slopes are altered, this can cause land slippage and large areas can become unstable. Detailed study indicates that Goriška brda is exposed to a high risk of landslides. This study was carried out as part of Interreg project IIIB Alpine Space, titled “The Terraced Landscapes of the Alpine Arc” (ALPTER).
