Web 2.0 applications with multimedia affordances provide a creative way to expose students to a non-threatening environment for practising English. Motivated by the potentials of this type of ...application for English speaking instruction, this study aimed to examine the effects of high school learners’ self-practice using an app called Voki on their speaking performance. A quasi-experimental control group design was employed, in which the effect was measured by means of two speaking tests before and after the treatment, and further explored with a semi-structured interview. The results showed the increase in the students’speaking skills and the satisfaction with this Web 2.0 tool for its effectiveness and engagement. Their shyness and nervousness about uttering the target language diminished as their confidence increased. Accordingly, more evidence of the efficacy of Voki on EFL learners’ speaking performance was offered in the study. Future research can investigate learners’ improvement in language proficiency in different skills and contexts and involve larger sample sizes.
A metaphor is the expression of a concept or a phenomenon by a person by using analogy in the sense that s/he perceives. This study was conducted for the purpose of finding the mental images (i.e. ...the metaphors) which social studies teacher candidates have on Web 2.0 technology. The study group consisted of 77 social science teacher candidates. The raw data, which were obtained from each of the participants by completing the "Web2.0 technology is like ..., because ..." statement, were analyzed by employing both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. The participants of the study produced 72 valid metaphors for Web 2.0 Technology. These metaphors were then examined in terms of their common features and were collected under 43 metaphors and 10 conceptual categories. According to the results of the present study, the social science teacher candidates explained Web 2.0 technology as a toolbox that contains everything in it, reflective, has the characteristic of changing, entertaining, octopus, interesting, a robot which can perform every task, canvas and informative. As a result of the present study, the metaphors that were produced by the social studies teacher candidates might be used in the process of explaining Web 2.0 concept.
While much of the current literature tends to focus on the direct effect of social influence on consumer online shopping behavior, our study drew heavily on social influence theory and argued for an ...alternative theory focusing on the moderating role of social influence. In particular, we explored how positive messages in online discussion forums may affect consumers’ decisions to shop online. We used a laboratory experiment in which the treatment group was required to read positive messages about online shopping experience in an online discussion forum. Positive social influence was found to reinforce the relationship between beliefs about and attitude toward online shopping, as well as the relationship between attitude and intention to shop. We believe our alternative theory provides new insight into the complex processes through which social influence is brought to bear on consumers’ online shopping decisions. Implications of our work are discussed.
Anyone who uses the Internet, wherever they live, is a potential participator. Whether informed or not, individuals participate in creating, collecting, and sharing geographic information. With the ...introduction of Web 2.0, content creation became a topic of universal interest. Web 2.0, the current state of the Internet, suggests greater user interactivity and user-generated content than its earlier incarnation. In recent years, user-generated spatial content, also known as volunteered geographic information (VGI), has gained popularity. Much of the existing literature explores VGI from a data typology perspective, and few studies consider it as a system. In this study, a vertical approach is employed to showcase the novel challenges of VGI that developers have encountered during the implementation or utilization of a project. First, six facets of VGI, encompassing political, economic, sociocultural, technological, legal, and ethical factors are thoroughly examined. Next, VGI challenges regarding its factors are categorized. Results reveal that most VGI challenges are technological in nature. Thus, drawing more attention to the technical facets of VGI is required. Additionally, establishing a standard for VGI development based on its various factors is necessary.
•We demonstrate that cultural blogs influence their readers’ choices of which cultural products to consume.•The effects of cultural blogs are highly dependent on the reader engagement elicited by the ...blog.•A blog’s content quality, enjoyment and homophily increase reader engagement.•We argue that cultural organizations should carefully consider establishing relationships with cultural bloggers.
While some conceptual studies have highlighted the impact that Web 2.0 technology and social media have on cultural industries, empirical evidence is still missing. Specifically, no study has considered the role of cultural bloggers, who mediate the information flows from cultural organizations to consumers. To fill this gap, this paper suggests and tests a model that explains blog readers’ intentions to consume cultural products suggested by the blog. The findings from a sample of 215 cultural blog readers show that the impact of the blog on reader intention to consume the products suggested by the blog is strongly influenced by reader engagement with the blog. In addition, the results highlight the effects of content quality, enjoyment, and homophily. The implications of these findings for bloggers and for organizations communicating through bloggers are discussed in detail.
Digitization has made the news accessible to many people worldwide. Since it contains large quantities of authentic language input, online news has riveted language learners, teachers, and educators. ...Despite the availability of multitudes of studies on online news, research is needed to explore its potential benefits and drawbacks to guide language education. To that end, this exploratory research presented the possible educational impacts of online news on language education, offered a practical guideline for language teachers, and suggested specific news websites to utilize. The examination of a systematic literature review revealed eight potential advantages (real-world context, vocabulary expansion, grammatical/syntactical practice, heightened cultural awareness, practice/improvement in four skills, authentic language input, and content diversity) and disadvantages (linguistic complexity, content bias and inaccuracy, limited interactivity, time consumption, accessibility, and technology dependency, information overload, digital distraction, and privacy concern). Accordingly, a five-step practical guideline for using online news for classroom teaching is suggested for language teachers. The research offers news websites beneficial to multilingual and multicultural learning and awareness. Finally, the research concludes with some limitations and recommendations for future studies.
