Throughout history certain forms and styles of dress have been deemed appropriate - or more significantly, inappropriate - for people as they age. Older women in particular have long been subject to ...social pressure to tone down, to adopt self-effacing, covered-up styles. But increasingly there are signs of change, as older women aspire to younger, more mainstream, styles, and retailers realize the potential of the 'grey market'. Fashion and Age is the first study to systematically explore the links between clothing and age, drawing on fashion theory and cultural gerontology to examine the changing ways in which age is imagined, experienced and understood in modern culture through the medium of dress. Clothes lie between the body and its social expression, and the book explores the significance of embodiment in dress and in the cultural constitution of age. Drawing on the views of older women, journalists and fashion editors, and clothing designers and retailers, it aims to widen the agenda of fashion studies to encompass the everyday dress of the majority, shifting the debate about age away from its current preoccupation with dependency, towards a fuller account of the lived experience of age. Fashion and Age will be of great interest to students of fashion, material culture, sociology, sociology of age, history of dress and to clothing designers.

Everywhere in the world there is a close connection between the clothes we wear and our political expression. To date, few scholars have explored what clothing means in 20th-century Africa and the ...diaspora. In Fashioning Africa, an international group of anthropologists, historians, and art historians bring rich and diverse perspectives to this fascinating topic. From clothing as an expression of freedom in early colonial Zanzibar to Somali women's headcovering in inner-city Minneapolis, these essays explore the power of dress in African and pan-African settings. This study aims to survey general information from garment factories in South Korea and China, representing, respectively, a developed country and a developing country. Additionally, within the same ...two countries, the study surveys garment manufacturing costs, from low to high, for a both a “basic” as well as for a “detailed” blouse, pants, and jacket (total of six items), with a goal of determining of an estimation of manufacturing cost in 2018. The results showed that there were meaningful differences between South Korea and China, as expected. Significant differences were shown in the number of employees, monthly wages, effecting factors on the lowest cost price period for a year; garment manufacturing time, and manufacturing costs of basic designs and detailed designs of blouse, pants, and jacket. The results of garments cost were significantly different consistent with the quality, from low cost to high cost, and quantities, from 500 pieces or less to above 10,000 pieces. The overall cost difference between two counties was about 2.6–3.5 times greater (Korea to China). Examining the same item, the difference was larger in low quality and small or large quantity rather than high quality and medium quantity. Interestingly, pants and jackets showed the largest cost difference at quantities above 10,000 pieces. Also, for 2018 there were differences in the estimated costs between both countries. The estimated cost differences were increasing from 2013 giving the implication that future manufacturing cost could increase between Korea and China.

Forecast colors provide information about colors and greatly influence color plans in fashion-related industries. Forecast colors are proposed and selected 18 to 24 months ahead of commercial needs ...by overseas and domestic public agencies and various intelligent agencies. However, until now scarce research has been done to determine how much forecast colors are actually reflected in the market. This paper attempts to predict which colors will be chosen to be the next forecast colors. To find out the answer to this question, we examined how much forecast colors were reflected in women's wear for the 12-year period between 1994 and 2006. First, we found a correlation coefficient between forecast colors and women's wear colors. The forecast colors which manufacturers used to make women's wear closely reflected the forecast colors that were proposed 18 months earlier. Second, we examined forecast colors and the time of their appearance in women's wear. Light pink and dark brown showed a positive correlation as the appearance and frequency of use of these two colors in women's wear corresponded well to the forecast colors. In contrast, however, some colors did not show a positive correlation. For example, the appearance and frequency of use of dark blue and black for women's wear exceeded those predicted by forecast colors, and other colors such as dark red had already been reflected in women's wear six months after the proposal of forecast colors. Third, we discussed the features of each color according to the average appearance rate and variant coefficient. As for women's wear colors, they were largely consistent with the distribution of forecast colors, with the exception of white and black. However, focusing on both variant coefficients, we found that the variant coefficient of women's wear colors exceeded that of forecast colors and the proposals of forecast colors were well reflected in women's wear colors.
