“Wild Boys, Value, and Longevity. Literary Value and Valuation in the Cases Mälarpirater by Sigfrid Siwertz and The Yearling by Marjorie Rawlings”
The valuation of literature, authorships, and ...individual texts ripples through time and space like waves. This pilot study which initiates a more extensive project on value considers Mälarpirater by Sigfrid Siwertz (1911) and The Yearling by Marjorie Rawlings (1938) and traces the literary valuation of these award-winning texts, usually seen as classic youth novels about wild boys. The authors were at approximately the same stage of their authorial life cycles at the time of publication, and both have been subject to major renegotiations in terms of value, but they are worlds apart when it comes to rhetorical position and style. The article draws up an inventory of the actors and value-creating acts in the valuation process, and discusses similarities and differences between two works that belong to such divergent contexts as the Swedish and the American literary arenas.
Conceptually, our readings draw on ideas from Pierre Bourdieu and Raymond Williams and operationalise a combination of these in relation to literary value. In the comparative analysis, we apply categories of value from previous Swedish literary research: style and form, knowledge, emotional, social, and economic values. The life cycles of the two authorships provide numerous examples of grounds for upward valuation and devaluation. The classification of Mälarpirater and The Yearling as youth novels, not least based on paratextual aspects, proves to be significant. Both Siwertz and Rawlings are more or less forgotten as authors today, but these works survived much longer than the authorships themselves.
The aim of our current research is to analyze the socio – linguistic aspects such as (age, gender, place, time, race, proper names, food names, moral and educational values) in the translation of ...Dominiga's novel by the Spanish writer Gonthaloa Torrenta Payster (1999). The translator's way of conveying those values to readers of young ages and youth. In this analysis, we have relied on the classification of the humanities and English translation, Andrew Chesterman. This classification includes sixteen variables, and each of these variables has a default value that has been classified into 4 groups which are (balance variables, language variables, translator variables and finally structural frame variables for the translated text). We raise several questions, including: - What are the considerations that the translator should take into account when translating for children and youth? - What knowledge and sciences must a translator possess in order to convey the main idea of the original text to readers of young ages and youth? - Is it possible for anyone with sufficient linguistic knowledge to translate a work directed at children and youth, or does he need to be familiar with the psychological, mental and social aspects of this category of readers? Each society has its own customs, traditions, ideas and beliefs that distinguish it from other societies. Here , the translating must take into account these aspects when translating any literary work from one language to another , especially if this work is intended for children , adolescents and youth , due to the importance and danger of these age stages and their impact on the formation of the personality of the child and young person , and directing it towards the right direction and avoiding all stories and novels that carry ideas that contradict the concepts and beliefs of the society in which the young reader lives . Therefore, the researcher wants to present through this research information, observations, analysis and strategies that the translator used when translating these aspects, and whether he used the correct method in translation or not.
Abstract Τhis article aims to investigate how students' responses to reading and talking about a fictional novel relate to teachers' ideas about the possibilities of a literary work. A large group ...(413) of readers aged 10–12 completed questionnaires both before and after reading the Romani author Katarina Taikon's Katitzi (1969/2015), which, in a fast-paced and engaging way touches upon subjects such as vulnerability and racism. Responses from 14 teachers are analysed in relation to these students’ answers. The results show great student engagement, with a clear majority (76%) formulating thoughts about Katitzi's situation and their contemporaries. The teachers, on the other hand, highlight problems they see with the literary work and tend to value reading non-fiction more. Through the discrepancy, the question arises as to whether the students' engagement after reading could be utilised more, so that they develop both as readers and participants in a current social debate.
Exhausted resources, exhausted art, exhausted science? Signs of exhaustion have been manifesting themselves in a wide variety of discourses for several years, especially since the coronavirus ...pandemic. Many people feel overwhelmed by the neoliberal performance and competitive society or are angry due to persistent racist and sexist structures. Traditional forms and genres of literature seem outdated in the face of new media means of expression and humanities methods and canons are no longer up to date. The academic and artistic contributions collected here touch on literary, social, political and ecological phenomena of exhaustion. They examine Franz Kafka's prose as well as German-language discourse pop, the settlement community on Monte Verità, contemporary children's and youth literature, Lower Sorbian fairy tales and the poetics of nature writing. The volume thus offers a multifaceted panorama of literature of exhaustion from the 19th century to the present day.
This paper describes a qualitative participatory action research study applying critical cosmopolitan literacies principles with pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers to address ...global human rights issues through international English youth literature. Using literary works on sociopolitical issues alongside critical pedagogy engagements and teaching practicum in various educational settings, the author as a teacher-researcher attempts to raise the student teachers' critical awareness to issues of power, privilege, and social justice embedded in the multicultural and multimodal texts. Analysis of the qualitative data indicates important outcomes in terms of an enhanced understanding of critical human rights issues pertaining to the formation of student teachers' identities as global-conscious and socially responsible educators. Meanwhile, with explicit guidance from the teacher educator, the student teachers also develop communicative intercultural competence, high-order thinking skills, and learning agency by engaging in multiliteracies practices within a cosmopolitan liteacies orientation.
