In 1928 Elena Fortún began to publish some collaborations in the children’s Sunday magazine Gente Menuda (Little People) in which Celia, an inquisitive and always wondering seven year-old girl, had ...the leading role. Those stories were the origin of one of Spanish children’s literature most famous sagas. They were published later in book format by Aguilar publishing house, but the series was stopped when Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. At the beginning of 1939 Fortún published the first book of the saga not previously serialized in newspapers: Celia, madrecita (Celia, Little Mother). In her exile in Buenos Aires she finished writing the next one: Celia en la revolución (Celia at the Revolution). However, this last book would not be published until 1987. In this paper we will focus specially in Celia at the Revolution given that the book provides us with a different vision about the Civil War. In the book Celia is a teenager who goes through different cities following her family and running from war. There are too the author’s own experiences and real facts. Narrated in first person point of view, offers a quite impartial perspective of the conflict because the objective was to narrate the reality of war more than simply justify or defend any of the sides.
Youth literature of the Meiji period (1868-1912) has been portrayed as moralistic and unable to overcome premodern literary styles and tropes. However, in this article I show how this literature was ...transformative and functioned as an arena within which literary writers and the government contended for the minds of young Japanese citizens. I reexamine the early development of the genre of youth literature in Japan through the lens of Juri Lotman's theory of cultural memory. In Lotman's spatial model of culture, or semiosphere, foreign concepts travel from the periphery to the centre of a given cultural (sub)sphere through an amalgamation with established texts, in a process of 'creative memory'. This process, I argue, is reflected in the serialized adaptations of premodern warrior legends by the pioneering author Iwaya Sazanami (1870-1933), in which he explores the conventions of nineteenth-century youth literature from the West. Recognizing the new genre's deep connection to citizenship, he shaped his protagonists into exemplary boys who display wanpaku (spirited) dispositions, in opposition to the moralism and 'narrow-minded nationalism' imparted at home and in schools. As a mediator between premodern and modern concepts and modes of text production, Meiji youth literature thus offered adults a way to develop modern identities.

Historically, literature for children and youth has been used as an effective tool to express utopian visions and dissemination of official ideologies. Youth literature is also revealing of ways that ...adults construe and construct childhood, influencing values, beliefs and images they wish to inculcate in young readers. This paper attempts to critically analyze contemporary international youth literature representing coming-of-age experiences during the Cultural Revolution by new immigrant Chinese writers. It explores why this significant political event has such a prevalent presence in contemporary English youth literature, how the Cultural Revolution has been represented in general, and how young people are portrayed in books addressing trauma, subjectivity, and different forms of personal agency. These eloquent narratives not only promote a point of view to interpret history in a given way, but also serve as instruments of political socialization and powerful agents of social change, essential for the development of adolescents and for the endorsement of democracy. Writing coming-of-age narratives is not only a lyrical elegy of exploring the catastrophic effects of historical events upon young people, but also a reminder to the world that the cataclysms of history cannot be forgotten and the historical lessons must be passed on to the later generations.
