  • Deliverance of the remnant from judgment in the prophecy of Isaiah
    Krašovec, Jože
Isaiah was primarily a prophet of doom in relation to pretentious pride and arrogance of political and religious rulers. In 2:9b he exclaims:"... forgive them not!" He received the commission to ... announce total desolation (6,11-13ab). Nevertheless, the idea of the remnant is expressed directly (7,3; 17,3) or indirectly in symbolical means of expression (10,5-6; 17,4-6). In Isaiah's view, the total destruction of any nation is not part of God's plan, for it is obvious that not all the people without exception were odburate. His own family and the disciples, who transmitted his prophecies to later generations are proof enough that Isaiah was not alone in his faithfulness. It follows that secondary passages concerning the concept of the remnant are not only fully compatible with the Isaianic alternation of prophecies of judgement and salvation, but also depend on Isaiah. The miraculous survival of an important remnant of the faithful was decisive for Israel then and in the future. The community that was delivered from judgement found in the theme of a purged remnant a new hermeneutical principle for the interpretation of history. Key words: Isaiah, pride, judgement of doom, deliverance of the remnant.
