  • Tretja stopnja čiščenja komunalnih odpadnih voda mesta Sežana z modelom rastlinske čistilne naprave : magistrsko delo = Tertiary treatment of Sežana city sewage with the constructed wetland model : master of science thesis
    Kukanja, Vlasta
The model of constructed wetland (CW) for tertiary treatment is adjusted to horizontal and vertical flow of sewage. In the year 1997 the model with its area of 3 m2 and sand in a range of 0 to 4 mm ... as a substrata, was planted withthe emergent macrophyte Phragmites australis. In the period from 1997 to 1998 basic hydraulic measurements and physical chemical analyses were made to evaluated the performance efficiency of CW model. By monitoring productivity of common reeds and by analyzing the uptake levels of N and P in its underground and above ground biomass, were made assessment of common reeds role in the decreasing of nutrients from the sewage. We performed experiments with hydraulic loadings:144 mm/day (detention time 38 hours), 48 mm/day (detention time 115 hours) and 24 mm/day (detention time 230 hours) in horizontal flow, and hydraulic loadings 210 mm/day (3 hours of inflow and 24 hours of outflow),160 mm/day (3 hours of inflow and 36 hours of outflow) and 96 mm/day ( 15 hours of inflow and 24 hours of outflow) in vertical flow of sewage. The permitted levels of effluent for COD, BOD5 and total P were attained with horizontal hydraulic loading 144 mm/day with the effciency 56, 78 and 68%; and vertical hydraulic loading 210 mm/day with efficiency 65, 76 and 90%. The permitted levels of effluent for ammonium were attained with horizontal hydraulic loading 24 mm/day with the effciency 82%. Input and output data were analyzed to obtain a value of BOD5 and ammonium rate constantk for more reliable estimation of required area of CW for tertiary treatment. Results proved that CW offers a wide spectrum of natural processes that serve to reduce nutrients concentrations efficiently. Therefore, the performances of those model strongly support the use of CW as efficient, low-cost alternatives for tertiary treatment in Slovenia.
