  • Upadanje zobnega kariesa v Sloveniji v obdobju 1987-1998 = Caries decline in Slovenia, 1987-1998
    Vrbič, Vitomir, 1935-
In the early post-war period, the prevalence of dental caries in Slovenia was very high. A marked improvement in the oral health status of the population has been observed over the past decade. In ... 1998, the mean number of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) in 12-year-old children was as low as 1.8, placing Slovenia among countries with very low DMFT scores. The proportion of cariesfree children (DMFT=0) in this age group also increased appreciably, attaining 40 % in 1998. This was accompanied by a significant decline in the proportion of children with one or more extracted teeth. Similar, though smaller improvements have been apparent also in the age groups 6,15 and 18 years, but less so in the older age groups, whose oral health status is expected to improve in the coming years. The described caries decline in Slovenia is attributed to systematic implementation of a variety of preventivemeasures, mainly on the part of children's dentists, who are assisted by parents, teachers, medical personnel, various professional groups, other organizations and individuals.
