    The constructed wetland Sampionka bears the same name as the factory producingdetergents and vinegar. It was built in order to treat the factoryćs wastewater. It has been in operation since the end ... of May 2000. It consists oftwo lagoons and four beds with subsurface flow. The volume of the la.goons is approximately 620 m3, whereas the beds have the area of 730 m2 and the volume 470 m3 altogether. Two beds have a horizontal water flow, but the second and the third have an intermittent flow. Carex sp. grows in the first and in the last bed, whereas Phragmites australis grows in the two middle beds. We monitored the efficiency of the constructed wetland in the first yearof its operation. The physical and chemical parameters were checked monthly between July 2000 and June 2001. There were high fluctuations of composition and pH values at the inlet into the bed 1, despite the presence ofcompensation lagoon. The average efficiency of the constructed wetland was for COD 64,6%, BOD5 67,2%, TOC 48,6%, total organic nitrogen over 96,3%, N03-Nover 52,5%, PO4-P over 68,1% and anionic tensides 75,6%. Special attention was given to the anionic tensides. They are especially problematic due to their poor biodegradability and surface activity. We tried to determineunder which conditions the removal of the anionic tensides and other substances is most effective. We wanted to find out which measures should be adopted in order to further improve the treatment efficiency. For this purposewe studied the biodegradability of the anionic tensides in the wastewater and tested the use of two bacterial products, which were supposed to accelerate their degradation. Measurements of height, density and biomass of macrophytes were taken. We tried to determine the growth of the biomass andthe density of roots on different locations, in order to estimate the contribution of the plants to the treatment effciency.
