    Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic significance of cysteine proteinase inhibitors of the cystatin superfamily - stefins A and B (SA, SB) and cystatinC (CC) - in squamous cell carcinoma of the head ... and neck. Patients andMethods: Concentrations of SA, SB and CC: were measured in samples of tumour cytosol and serum from 90 or 35/90 patients, respectively. Results: Higher levels of all the three inhibitors correlated significantly with longerdisease-free survival (DFS) in our patients. Multivariate analysis showed SA to be the most important independent prognostic factor for DFS. No correlation was observed between the serum levels of studied inhibitors and survival of the patients. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that the cytosol levels (but not also the serum levels) of SA - and to a lesser degree also of SB and CC - could be of prognostic significance in this particular type of cancer.
