  • Pomen mikrobioloških preiskav pri okužbah na spodnjih dihalih = The role of microbiological diagnostic methods in lower respiratory tract infections
Tomič, Viktorija ; Seme, Katja, 1966-
Currently available methods for microbiological diagnosis of lower respiratorytract in fections (LRTIs) are sputum Gram stain and culture, blood culture, detection of antigen in the specimens, ... serological and molecular microbiology methods. Sputum Gram stain is surely the cheapest, fastest and simplest microbiological method which can help us in treating outpatients withLRTIs. Serological methods are not suitable in the acute stage of illness.Invasive diagnostic procedures are not indicated when treating patients in the community setting. Microbiological investigations give us dataon most common respiratory pathogens and their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, which in turn will make the choice o f antibiotic treatment easier. Also, guidelines for empirical antibiotic therapy can be made in order to assist the primary care physicians who almost never make use of microbiology laboratory.
