  • Okužbe z bakterijo Streptococcus agalactiae pri novorojencih = Neonatal GBS infections
    Mole, Helena ...
During the past two decades group B streptococci (GBS, species designation Streptococcus agalactiae) have emerged as an important cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Early onset GBS disease ... is caused by vertical transmission of GBS during labour or delivery, whereas late-onset GBS disease is the result of either vertical, community or nosocomial infection. Risk factors for GBS disease in neonates are maternal intrapartum colonisation withGBS and prematurity. Prevention of GBS disease in neonates is based on intrapartal administration of antibiotic to all GBS colonised women and to those with any risk factor developed during labour (delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, amniotic rupture >= 18 hours or intrapartal temperature >= 38° C). Since these strategies are insufficient, development of vaccine to preventGBS infection is encouraged. The incidence of early-onset GBS disease among neonates born at Department for Gynecology and Obstetrics Ljubljana in the past two years became similar to the incidence reported in the Western countries: from 3.4 per 1000 live births in 2002 to 4.9 per 1000 live births in 2003.
