Vpliv koncentracije hemoglobina v krvi na izid zdravljenja neoperabilnih karcinomov ustnega žrela : magistrsko deloOblak, Irena, 1967-The response of tumour cells to ionizing radiation is strongly enhanced by presence of oxygen. In anemic patients tumours are less oxygeneted and are expected to be less sensitive to irradiation and ... therefore less curable. Numorous authors investigated the influence of anemia on radiocurability of tumours. Some authors found that anemia diminished the radiocurability of sometumours while not in others. The aim of this study was to see wether the survival of patients with advanced, technically inoperable oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, was influenced by the hemoglobin blood level. At the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana, from September 1990 to August 1997, 70 patients were treated with definitive irradiation and concomitant chemotherapywith Mitomycin C and Bleomycin for the advanced, technically inoperable squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx. There were 3 female and 67 male patients, their age ranged from 37 years - 70 years (median 51 years). The stage of the tumour was III in 12 patients, IVa in 46, and IVb in 12 patients. The total tumour dose was 64 Gy - 70 Gy (median 68 Gy), daily dose 1.8 Gy - 2 Gy, delivered with 2 opposing fields, 5 times weeklyč the doseof Mitomycin C in 67 patients was 7.6 mg/m2 -16.4 mg/m2 (median 14. mg/m2)- 3 patients received only Bleomycin: the dose of Bleomycin in 66 patients was 5 mg - 75 mg (median 25 mg) - 4 patients received only Mitomycin G. The local/regional recurrence free survival (RFS), the disease specific survival (DSS), and the survival regarding loco-regional disease (SLRD) with respect to the blood level of Hb before, during, and at the end of the treatmem were analyzed.
