  • Some characteristics of university sport in Slovenia
    Markelj, Neja ...
The purpose of the research is to explore the present state of university sport at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor. Our aim was also to examine how the present conditions ... affect the students' participation in sport programmes organised by university or ????. Therefore we have described the role of government and nongovernment organisations in the area of university sport and examined closely the frequency and way of sport activity of Slovenian students. We believe those are the best indicatorsto show to what extent are students satisfied with the existent conditions and offered sport programmes. Students also gave the indirect answers to that question. The article consists of two researches both based on the same questionnaire. The first was performed at University of Ljubljana (Majerič, 2002) and the second on 5-% representative sample (705) of students of University of Maribor in school year 2001/02. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all variables. The rang-scale for frequency of sport participation was based on frequency distribution and the statistical significance of differences was tested with ANOVA. The way of sport activity was tested with the Phearson' [chi] [sup]2. According to the results most of the students of University of Ljubljana are not satisfied with the offered sport programmes and the organisation of university sport. Consequently, the majority search for unorganised sport activity (alone or with friends). However the conditions for organising sport programmes at University of Maribor are better, so the number of students who participate in organised sport programmes (that is P.E., programmes of šOU andstudent's sport clubs) is slightly higher but yet very low. Students are aware of the positive influence sport has on their life, therefore they seek different ways of sports activity that are offered by university and other sport organisations. The results of the research confirm our anticipation: the conditions strongly affect the way of studentsć sport activity and students are not satisfied with the present state of university sport. The number of sport active young people is decreasing. The reorganisation of the whole Slovenian university sport system is badly needed. More professional organised sport programmes has to be prepared and should be adjusted to studentsć needs and interests. We assume that the improved sport programmes, conditions and education would pull in more students. We could reach a higher number of sport active young people after graduation and consequently higher number of sport active adults.
