  • Nacionalizam i književnost : (primer Srbije) = Nacionalizem in književnost : (primer Srbije)
    Beltran, Ana
The aim of this thesis is to show how nationalist ideology is connected with the production and reproduction of literature and to address the consequences of instrumentation of art for political ... purposes - specifically, nationalist ideology, with particular reference to the wave of populist literature, also known as national realism that was widely popular in Serbian literature in 1980's. The first part of the study presents existing theories in the field of nationalism studies, from authors such as: Benedict Anderson, Ernest Gellner, Anthony D. Smith, and Umut Özkirimli. After reviewing existing theories and highlighting elements of nationalist ideology appearing in Serbian public discourse, an overview of the sociopolitical situation in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in the 1980's is provided. The overview includes statements of public figures, such as notable writers and poets, representatives of various institutions, including The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and The Association of Writers in Serbia (UKS). These statements are put in context of the growing economical and political crisis in the country and the rise of nationalism that they support. In the second part, an analysis of two novels from the wave of national realism, The Book about Milutin ( Knjiga o Milutinu author: Danko Popović) and Ascension (Vaznesenje author: Vojislav Lubarda) is conducted. The novels were chosen on the basis of their popularity and positive reviews. The first novel, Knjiga o Milutinu, is a book with the highest number of copies printed in Serbia, while the second one, Vaznesenje, received a literary award by NIN magazine for the novel of the year in 1989, which places both novels on Dragan Žunić's list of the most influential books in Serbia in the period of ten years, from 1985 to 1995. First, the plot line is presented, which is then followed by an analysis of the main characters and literary techniques used in the novel, followed by an overview of responses from critics and an analysis of the elements of national myth present in the novel and the characteristics of the Other presented in the novel. In conclusion, the results of the analysis are presented in the context of the response of the Serbian public to the war the followed the political and economic crisis in SFRY, the war crimes discovered after the war, and the ongoing process of peace-building in the region. It is not surprising that in a society where intellectual elites promote nationalist ideology and hate speech, even individuals who would not define themselves as nationalists start using elements of nationalist discourse that permeate public speech. Within such an environment a peaceful dialogue and peace are impossible, and conflict is inevitable. For that reason, it is vital to recognize practices of using art, specifically literature, as a medium for spreading nationalist ideology as harmful and dangerous. Writers are members of the intellectual elite and as such they have an impact on the public opinion that should not be overlooked or dismissed as irrelevant.
