Motivational aspects of using children's literature in ELT for young children = Motivacijski vidiki uporabe otroške literature pri pouku angleščine za majhne otroke : magistrsko deloPavlin, Luka, 1993-Motivation and other affective characteristics of children are one of the most important aspects to be considered in early language learning. Children in Slovenia start learning EFL in primary school ... at the age of six or seven and for them, children's literature is an ideal source of holistic language learning. Furthermore, learning EFL using children's literature is highly motivating for young learners. To prove this, seven lessons in grades one and two at a primary school were observed with pre-prepared lesson observation tasks, four lessons were taught, learner feedback was collected with feedback forms, and an interview with the EFL teacher was conducted. By these means it has been established that children were more active and enjoyed lessons based on children's literature more. It has also been pointed out that storytelling is a more motivating way of presenting a text than reading, and that children's literature should be combined with other means of language teaching (TPR, singing, play-acting) to be used to full effect. This implies that EFL teachers of young learners should include children's literature in their lessons on a regular basis, but not overuse it. Since no coursebooks for young learners are approved and not a lot of pre-fabricated materials are available in Slovenia, preparing a literature-based lesson takes a lot of resources.
