  • Enzymatic finishing and functionalisation of lignocellulosic based technical fibres
    Schroeder, Marc ...
With enzymatic functionalisation we are able to improve fibre properties and enhance bulk properties of existing products for better performance. For thispurpose materials from flax and coconut ... fibres were chosen as representative lignocellulosic fibres used for technical purpose. The main difference between these fibres is in chemical structure of lignin and its content. In flax fibres cellulose molecules form microfibrils, which form a secondary wall, embedded in non-cellulosic polysaccharides with very low amount of lignin. Coconut fibre is embedded in thin walled pith tissue. Fibres comprise pit like openings which are remnants of pith tissue attached to the surface of the fibre. Elementary fibre has helical structured cell wall. Mature coconut fibre consists of 44- 46% of cellulose and 42-44% of lignin, whereas flax fibre consists of 65-87% cellulose and 1-5% lignin [1,2]. Enzymatic coating was performed with low molecular weight laccase, purified and isolated from T. hirsuta and applied on flax and coconut fibres. In order to determine optimum incubation conditions, an experimental design with three factors (molar ratio reactant, enzyme activity, and incubation time) at five different levels, varying from 0 to 50 mM (reactant), from 0 to 20 Units (activity), and from 0 to 240 min (time) based on a central composite statistical design was followed [3]. Different phenols, e.g. hydroxyquinone, as well as various methoxyphenols guaiacol, vanillin, ferulic acid, guaiacolsulphonic acid, and 2-methoxy-5-nitrophenol were screened. The functional characteristics were described assessing antibacterial properties and colouration. Enzymatic functionalisation of the surfaces was determined chemically by relevant surface analytical techniques as ATR-FTIR.
