  • UV-rays' blocking property of dyed cotton and cotton/PES blended fabrics [Elektronski vir]
    Ojstršek, Alenka ; Fakin, Darinka
There is increasing awareness of the dangers posed to human health by overexposure to solar radiation, especially UV-B regions of the spectrum that destroy the DNA of human cells. Efforts have, ... therefore, been made to provide protective clothing against the sun, while still permitting outdoor activities. The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between the absorption of electro magnetic waves from a region of 290 to 400 nm of wavelength using four fabrics different in yarn, density and mass, dyed with two types of dye, and their blocking properties against UV-rays. Two cotton shirting fabrics were dyed using vat dyes and two cotton/PES blend fabrics were dyed using ready-mixed blends of vat and disperse dyes in yellow, red and blue colours of different concentrations. Dyeing was performed using the ćfoil methodć, which represents a laboratory simulation of the thermosol/pad-steam process. The dyed samples were colourimetrically evaluatedin the region of visible spectra using a SF 600+ spectrophotometer (Datacolor) in the CIELAB colour system, and UPF, UVA, UVB values were measured using a Cary solarscreen 50 spectrophotometer (Varian). The obtained results indicate that the fabric structure, hue, and concentrations of the dyes are in correlation with the UV absorbing capacity.
