    The paper presents an efficient approcah to shape optimization of elastic shell structures under stability constraints. To reduce stability-related problems, a special form of the optimization ... problem is proposed. Due to this special form, the response analysis can be undertaken by using the usual incremental procedure. Additionally, one eigenvalue problem has to be solved at each equilibrium point. This analysis enables the computation of estimated values of the objective and constraint functions as well as their derivatives with respect to the design variables. The procedure assumes the presence of limit critical points only since bifurcation critical points are much more difficult to handle. Bifurcation points are avoided by introducing adequate parameters which cause asymetric imperfection of the structural shape. It turns out that the worst-case values of these parameters may be obtained easily during the optimization procedure.
