To assure long term survival of family farms, well regulated farm succession is a vital importance. This is a complex process where many factors influence the final event, the ultimate transfer of ... family farm from older to younger generation. In addition, organic agriculture is also becoming an increasingly important factor for the future existence of the family farm. The aim of this paper is to analyse 17 conventional and 30 organic family farms from the Southwestern part of Slovenia regarding their current succession status in order to find out which group of farms has better current succession status. The methodology was based on the decision analysis technique, DEX, an expert system shell for qualitative decision modelling and support. The multi-attribute decision model was developed and applied to the family farms data, obtained by the use of a standardized questionnaire on the family farm succesion process. The results confirm our assumption and indicate that organic farms have better succession situation.
