    The relevant parameter for safe service of a welded structure is the critical opening displacement (CTOD). These values usually depend on crack plane orientation in relation to the direction of ... welding.CTOD values were measured at distinct weld joint areas of different microstuctures. Surface cracked specimens were used and the results were compared to those determined by specimens cracked in the through thickness.The facture machanics analysis of surface notched specimens shows a significant influence of weded pass height on the ctritical CTOD. Higher CTOD values at the initiation of stable crack propagation were determined withouth the influence of welded pass height in the case of specimens notched in the through thickness. It is necessary to weld with thinner passes. The initiation of stable crack propagation is relevant for safe service life of welded structures. Also, the welding direction should be considered with resepect to the load mode and eventually the orientation of the crack plane.
