  • Cross-disciplinary view of the function of modal verbs in research papers [Elektronski vir]
    Vičič, Polona
Research papers are increasingly recognised as being characterised by both genre- and discipline-specific use of various linguistic features. One such feature are modal verbs, which through their ... modal meanings express different communicative functions and are often employed by research paper writers to qualify their commitment to claims, to express obligation to act in line with the presented findings or to detach themselves from their claims. The first two functions are typically associated with epistemic and deontic modality respectively and used by the authors to express their subjective attitudes. Conversely, the third function is typically associated with dynamic modality and used to report claims objectively, i.e. as constrained by factors external to the author. To see to what extent discipline-specific conventions complement genre-specific conventions the present paper will, using a combination of quantitative and semantic analysis, focus on modal verb use in research papers in logistics. To provide cross-disciplinary view further comparison will be made between modal verb use in logistics research papers and papers in medicine, biology and literary criticism. The goal is to detect the possible discipline-specific use which may have useful implications for the teaching of English for Specific Purposes to students of logistics and other related disciplines.
