  • The effects of oil and roughness on optimal lubrication of gear box
Zafošnik, Boštjan ; Fajdiga, Gorazd ; Flašker, Jože
It is very important to choose the right lubricant for gearboxes in order to minimise friction and loss of power. The most important lubrication parameter is oil viscosity which varies with ... temperature and pressure changes. A computer system was set up to determine the optimum viscosity and quality of oil lubricants. Optimum oil viscosity is estimated in regard to the minimal lubricant film thickness, proposed by Dowson and Higginson EHD theory, the temperature according to DIN 3990, and surface roughness. Oil viscosity and surface roughness are iteratively determined considering also geometrical and operational gear data. The method provides the relative lubricant film thickness satisfactory for engineering practice. The oil quality is another parameter of great importance. It is determined in accordance with FZG test results based on DIN 3990. By using the program for oil viscosity and quality optimization we can easily estimate the optimum viscosity with respect to the minimal lubricant film thickness, temperature and surface roughness. We can also see which load case the oil should carry in the FZG test.
