  • Numerical determination of direction of surface crack initiations on gear teeth flanks

    Numerical prediction of the direction of crack initiation on gear tooth surface was investigated. Two most widely used criterions in fracture mechanics have been adopted to predict the direction of ... crack initialization. Both criterions are compared analysing the direction of crack initialization on gear tooth surface at different points, where both the geometry and the loading condition are different. Numerical results were compared to experimental data to determine the accuracy of presented criterions. It was concluded that both criterions can predict the direction of crack initialization, but the accuracy of prediction is not very high.
