Hvalič Touzery, Simona ; Lobe, Bojana
Over the past decades, e-learning has gained in importance in tertiary education and is now used at universities across the world. However, e-learning is not always successfully implemented. ... According to research findings, the success of implementing e-learning in study programs is significantly influenced by the readiness to embrace this type of learning and by the attitudes of instructors and students alike towards the new paradigm. Aims: To examine the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning and to establish the attitudes of undergraduate nursing students towards e-learning. Methods: Quantitative research was conducted in March 2014 on a convenience sample of students from the Faculty of Health Care Jesenice. With 92 questionnaires returned in total, the response rate was 57.2%. Internal consistency of the questionnaire designed on the basis of a literature review was high: Cronbach's alpha was 0.966. Results were analyzed with the statistical software SPSS, with univariate and bivariate statistical methods. Results: Study results revealed a distinctly negative attitude of nursing students towards e-learning. Students prefer a traditional learning style. Those who have more experience with e-learning who use the e-classroom setting in more subjects' tend to have a more positive attitude towards e-learning. Furthermore, student respondents who study on a regular basis tend to have a more negative attitude towards e-learning compared to those who do not study regularly. We also found that the self-assessed level of expertise and familiarity with computerscorrelated negatively with a positive attitude towards e-learning. Conclusions: Many different factors influence students' attitudes towards e-learning, and they are often connected with its implementation. This means that great responsibility lies with higher education institutions and instructors. The EU encourages the use of ICT in order to enhance teaching methods and improve the learning experience. Because the future lies in e-learning, new ways must be found to improve nursing students' attitudes towards e-learning. Our research would have to be expanded to include a random, representative sample, and different (mixed) research methods would have to be employed.
