  • Structural changes of pre-treated flax fibres followed by FT-IR spectroscopy
    Sfiligoj-Smole, Majda ...
To remove different impurities from flax fibres, i.e., pectic substances, lignin, hemicelluloses, waxes, fats, mineral salts, natural colouring matter and water-soluble compounds the pre-treatment ... processes are needed. For the purposes of flax fibres alkaline, acid and enzyme pre-treatment, respectively can be used. Improved fibres sorption properties obtained by the treatment influence further processing of flax material (dyeing, printing, finishing). However, treatment processes dependent on the treatment conditions influence the fibre structure. The aim of this work was to study structure changes in flax fibres occurring by different pre-treatment processes; therefore FT-IR spectroscopic studies were performed. FT- IR spectra were obtained on a Perkin Elmer spectrophotometer using an ATR attachment. Different absorption bands characteristic for crystalline and amorphous macromolecular chains were observed. The observed structural changes in alkali pre-treated flax fibres were compared to the acid and enzyme treated flax fibres.
