  • Textile industry as a source of dioxins [Elektronski vir]
    Križanec, Boštjan ...
Dioxins are persistent, toxic pollutants that accumulate in animal fats. Exposure to even low doses of dioxins can lead to cancer, damages of the nervous system, immune system diseases and ... reproductive disorders. Synthesis of textile dyes comprises a relatively large group of chemicals with complex synthetic procedure. It was discovered that during the synthesis of textile dyes dioxins can be formed. Further formations of dioxins from precursors can occur via dyeing and textile finishing processes with conditions favoured forthe generation of dioxins. In our work a considerable level of dioxins was determined in some textile disperse black dyes. Further distribution of dioxins and their fate during textile processes were investigated. Severel dyeing experiments were conducted at a laboratory scale utilizing dyes contaminated with dioxins and their precursors. After dyeing and finishing, the concentrations of dioxins were increased. Compared to the input concentrations they were up to 15 times higher. These findings are evidence that dioxins in textile industry may be a significant source of both human exposure and environmental contamination.
