    Since 1987, several reports have described neurosyphilis and other complications of syphilis in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), 1 – 7 often after the patients have been treated with penicillin G benzathine, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Also, in 1987 viable treponemes were identified in the cerebrospinal fluid of two HIV-infected patients after this therapy. 8 These observations have prompted questions about the adequacy of the CDC-recommended treatment for HIV-infected patients with early syphilis. 3 , 9 – 11 The efficacy of the recommended therapy for patients with early syphilis who are not infected with HIV was . . .
