An examination of the national minority question, with emphasis on German-speaking minorities of Central Europe, reveals the importance of maintaining terminological clarity to avoid political connotations tied to certain terms. After a historical sketch of the renaissance of the national minority movement throughout the world, which reached a peak in the mid-1960s, attention is focused on the meaning of the terms "people," "national minority," "ethnic group," "nation," & "nationality." Special emphasis is given to the consistent use of "national minority" in describing Carinthian Slovenes, Hungarians in Yugoslavia, & South Tirolians. Modified HA
