Reflects on the implications of two recent articles on aspects of the impact of the 1918-1919 epidemic in NZ not necessarily captured in traditional burden of disease estimates, and steps that need to be considered when preparing for future influenza pandemics. Focuses on identifying vulnerable populations, availability of influenza vaccination, vaccination failure and strategies for improving vaccination effectiveness, priorities for infection control, and health system response to future pandemics.
