    Slade, Marilyn Myers

    Journal Article

As New Hampshire's economy continues to boom, companies' payrolls are growing as well. And that means there are not only more jobs at the rank-and-file level, but in the managerial ranks as well. But who are the people who get the middle-and upper-management positions -- the big jobs that pay $50,000 a year and more? "In a majority of cases, companies prefer hiring state residents. The simple reason is it is cheaper," said Walter D. Kilian, the founder of Availability, the state's oldest management recruiting firm under the same ownership. His Bedford-based firm leans toward manufacturing and technology work, but deals in all aspects of middle- and upper-management placement. According to Kilian, 65 percent of his placements come from New Hampshire. (excerpt)
