  • Can you see the island?
    Williams, Joe

    The Maori law review, 20/Oct
    Journal Article

Challenges Te Hunga Roia Māori o Aotearoa, the Māori Law Society to leave behind the known and venture out into the unknown when embarking on its leadership journey to make the legal system more amendable to tikanga Māori. Tells the stories of Kupe's journey to Aotearoa and Nainoa Thompson's efforts to re-learn Kupe's skill in the 1970s to explain the importance of being able to 'see the island' (know where you are going on the journey). Reflects on how things have changed for Māori since the inception of Te Hunga Roia Māori o Aotearoa in 1988. Points to examples of positive structural change. Highlights a range of poor statistics for Māori. Draws attention to the continued loosening of ties connecting iwi, hupū and whānau for a growing body of the Māori community.
