Considers the significance of the Māori language of economics by giving a brief insight into the use of te reo Māori in 19th-century economic activity. Provides a brief introduction to the Māori economy and the broader use of te reo Māori in the 19th century. Uses two texts to demonstrate examples of Māori language use in economic activity in this time period : 'Easy lessons on money matters for the use of young people' (Whately, 1851) and a passage in 'Te karere Māori - Māori messenger' from 1856.
