Mark Gold et al propose a most interesting additional causative factor of the disproportionate substance abuse rate of anethesiologists in the state of Florida. Although the study did document measurable levels of anesthetic agents fentanyl and propofol in the ambient air of the operating room, most patients undergoing cardiac surgery are intubated with an endotracheal tube that allows no or minimal escape of exhaled gases.
