In this work, the authors explore the intricate relationship between Bernardo Vega's Memorias and the Puerto Rican diasporic experience, reflecting on the textual deformations and authorial ambiguities that have shaped the historical and literary reception of Memorias. This piece is an unorthodox collaboration between artist and author Molly Crabapple and political scientist and museum curator Monxo Lopez. In it, they further deform Bernardo Vega's text by visually enhancing its emotional resonance and emphasizing its role as a vital organizing tool for the Puerto Rican community in New York City. This ongoing project aims to articulate the diaspora's claim to New York's urban space and history, advocating for a broader understanding of its "right to the city" amid contemporary socio-political challenges.
