Periodical newspapers, which were published in the languages of ethnical emigrant communities in the 19th and 20th century, represent one of the major indicators of organized cultural and social life of a particular emigrant community in the foreign country. Beside the informative role, ethnical publications also had an important educational function as they served the emigrant community as a reading material in the native language. The article evaluates the role and importance of Vestnik magazine, which was published by Slovenian Association Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Vestnik, the third oldest publication in Slovene language in Australia, had some exceeded its initial mission of an ethnical association newsletter and became a monthly newspaper for the entire Slovene emigrant community in Australia. In the article author presents a review of editors, editorial boards and correspondents, analyses main topics of reporting and debates the editorial policies towards the former republic of Yugoslavia as they appear in the magazine's four-decade history.
