Critics have been unable to define the narrative structure of Bloke Modisane's autobiography 'Blame Me on History' because they read it purely as social commentary without using his other writings to provide a context. Using other works of Modisane, such as his short story 'The Dignity of Begging,' reveals some of Modisane's recurrent preoccupations and his perception of the status of African intellectuals. The book is not merely a comment on the social effects of apartheid but a narrative of self-exploration.
