In this paper we study lower bounds in a unified way for a large family of topological indices, including the first variable Zagreb index M1α. Our aim is to obtain sharp inequalities and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs. The main results provide lower bounds for several vertex-degree-based topological indices. These bounds are new even for the first Zagreb, the inverse and the forgotten indices.
