Tuesday had been busy as well, as owners discovered that plows mounted for the first time this winter didn't work. At Walter's Hardware on Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre, owner Walter Letanski spent more time clearing the parking lot than working inside. Customers were scarce and he gave employees the day off. The snow helped Hilbert's in another way; the family-owned company provides plowing service to 40 commercial customers. Larry Hilbert said his crew was out at 2 a.m. to make the first of two or three passes as accumulations mounted, making for at least one big pay day this winter.
